The best way to penalize erratic driving
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:47:21 PM »
Many here share my aversion to lost balls.  Features such as thick fescue and man-made water hazards are anathema to those who think like me.  Yet there ought to be some penalty for off-line driving.  IMHO, the Pinehurst area courses achieve a good balance because bad drives find woods where there is no underbrush; thus you can find your ball; have a chance to recover; but haven't been let off scot free after a bad tee shot.

I don't like lost balls either...but I guess that mean I better be damn sure I hit it straight enough, which might mean not always hitting a driver off the tee

with all of today's tehnnology benefits we should all be straighter
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

My home course has enormous fairways, and if you miss those significantly (by 20 yards), you will lose your ball in woods and wetlands. For good players it is an easy driving course.  For poor players, it is too penal. Without question, a major weakness in the course, which is not for everybody.

Is to have greens that significantly reward accurate driving. Green design and maintenance are of equal importance.
