Guys this is not about golf at all. i was just making a comment to John about bringing his wife. Most women on a trips overseas do not seek out industrial views. John will likely do some things on the trip that the guys would pass on. I will play golf, drink a few, visit with the guys and eat, then play golf again.

Re timing: I am not sure why Mark B's suggestion of May has fallen out of favour. I don't have that strong a view, other than that I agree with Sean that aiming for peak conditioning is not something that should bother us too much since it is pot-luck.

Although I am very keen to play Ganton, I definitely agree with Rich/Craig etc that minimising driving will be good for the main purpose of the event, which is camraderie - which keeps us at Moortown rather than Ganton for the initial phase.

Thanks Tiger I understood what you were saying.  Trish does play (last time I was in England I dragged her with me to play Hayling, Walton Heath and Ashdown Forest), but you are right - some sightseeing, shopping, spa time, etc. will certainly make the trip more enjoyable from her perspective, and hence more a more "saleable" enterprise for me.

John no problem. I took my gf at the time to Ganton and Woodhall Spa with a side trips to York and Lincoln on the way. I should note the length of the side trips relative to the driving time and energy spent on golf would not pass muster with many wives. However both York and Lincoln were great places to visit. I found the golf to be supreme in both places as well. If Buda does go to Alwoodley, I will be hard pressed not to make another pass by Ganton if possible.

Actually, Alwoodley is on the very northern edge of Leeds.  It is on the edge of fabulous countryside with Harewood House just down the road, Castle Howard within easy reach.  Shopping in Leeds or Harrogate is plentiful and good.  There are great value coach trips out of Leeds to the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorks Moors etc, and there are no more atmospheric ruins than Fountains, Byland and, especially, Rievaulx.  Get out to some of the smaller towns such as Helmsley or Easingwold and there are good antique shops (antique prices in Britain have fallen exponentially since 9/11).  You could spend a glorious day in mediaeval York.  There's plenty for wives or non-golfers and Leeds is not just a dump, it is the home of Opera North, of a fine civic art gallery, there is a first-rate international concert season in the Town Hall.  There are some great restaurants, highly ranked in the Good Food Guide and Michelin.  There are great breweries, many really good local foods......  Don't dismiss it!

Why don't you guys do it in Canada and play Highland Links and sample the Trail that will end with Ben Dewar's Cabot Links... I'm sure Ran would come then!

Noel, There is no reason not to have an July/August event in the great northeast of Canada. I have trouble saying the names of the cities due to continued 9/11 captivity shock as well as the knowledge of Canada one gains from watching Southpark.

They have good single malt whiskey there and Halifax is only a 2hr flight from NYC.. Also the lobster is sublime

I am a probable for September.

May gets my vote.  As does Moortown with a Ganton sidetrip.

Early-ish May is a definite for me.  September is the same.

Tiger - perhaps the most beautiful countryside in England is just north of Ganton.  The North York Moors are spectacular and it seems that every village is a picture postcard with a fantastic country pub.  York is one of England's great cities and caters well for visitors.  Leeds and York are both good for shopping, though neither matches London, it has to be admitted.  The country immediately north of Leeds is also fine and Harrogate is another town worth visiting.

I would not be able to commit to a September date at the moment as traditionally I have two other golf trips that month, both of which have still to be arranged for 2007.

I spoke yesterday with David Crabtree, Centenary Captain of Alwoodley.  He advised that it would be pretty difficult for TAGC to host anything before the end of August.  They have centenary events, the Ladies' British Open Amateur, the County Championship and other events.  He was enthusiastic about it, nonetheless, if in September.  Nick Leefe is now off in the States, so nothing more can be done until he returns at the end of the month.  If you need a decision earlier than that you'll have to look elsewhere.

I like the May 9-11 dates and venues that you identified as available, and if most others agree and if they are still available, perhaps we should book them, even if only tentatively.  I also like the idea of us organising it and offerring any TAGC member to join in as he or she pleases.  My guess is they wouldn't mind an outing which celebrates their club and its history, but doesn't take up any prime space on the calendar nor require any organisation on their part.  If we try to get on their official calendar, it could be troublesome, for them and for us.

Obviously David is incorrect - he's only the Captain!  Let's leave it to Nick when he returns.  I think, however, that Nick feels the greens won't be as you'd like them in May (and David also agreed with that viewpoint).  What I do know is that the club will be very welcoming and, those of you who are visiting it for the first time, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
