French courses aerial - # 2 - DINARD GOLF CLUB
« on: August 29, 2006, 07:56:16 AM »
A bad aerial this week because satellites views are from different times  ??? (see the brown fairways on the bottom and the green fairways at the top). I’m not sure the scale is the same in the two parts of the aerials but the routing of the course is fully respected.

Good luck !

I have never seen the full routing of the course, but my guess on this one would be Biarritz.

There seems to be a few areas where the original concept of what we now refer to as the "Biarritz" could have been used.

Can't wait to get the answer, thought....

Wow, looks cool.

I wonder why the course doesn't use that peninsula in the top photo (the one with what looks like walking trails) wasn't used. Looks like some neat holes could have been routed there.

Sébastien,

Much tougher than aerial #1, but the road and roadside holes remind me of an old course on the north coast, am I getting close ?

Don't give the answer just yet, someone should chime in if my info is correct.

Not Biarritz. The difference between the two photo's show it's tidal - so it's not on the Med.  So Brittany or Normandy would seem the best bet...

More clues please

Ok for some clues.

The logo of the club :

The architect : Tom DUNN

The period : it is the second oldest course in France.

It must be Dinard, then, per Tom MacWood's guess.

Tom has it right  :D

it's the Dinard Golf Club - founded in 1887 by british residents.

Tim,

I've no details on the routing choices in these early days for golf in France (1887). In my memory, the peninsula is very hilly but it's a good position for a tee, if not for a green (largely blind because of the topography).
The view is wonderful.

It's interesting to know that Tom DUNN with Willie DUNN were involved in the remodelling of the Biarritz course in 1889 and they create new holes for this course like the famed Chasm hole (Biarritz hole).

So why does Tom DUNN create a hole which cross the sea at Biarritz and don't incorporate one at Dinard ? I don't know  ???.

Maybe this peninsula was not available at this time (in term of propriety) ? Maybe Tom DUNN was angry to not use this peninsula at Dinard and 2 years later, he benefits from the Biarritz occasion to develop a concept he has in mind since Dinard ? There are only assumptions, not golf architecture history.

I don't have the answer to your question, but it may have had something to do with the terrain. The photos I've seen of Dinard show quite severe terrain and elevation change...if I remember correctly some of the coastal land slopes steeply toward the sea. Dinard was also redesigned at some point (at least once)...by Willie Park-Jr I believe. Thanks for posting these aerials.
