Links Magazine -Best Match Play Holes
« on: August 31, 2006, 01:14:16 PM »
The Sept/Oct Links Magazine has a foldout of the best match play hole in golf by our esteemed Geoff Shackelford. It hasn't appeared on their website yet, so guess what they are.
Hints: Five 3s, five driveable 4s, 4 other 4 pars, four par fives, all reachable with some regularity. Six non-US. Only three have OB (I think). Water on 3 par 3s, one short 4, one regular 4, two fives. One hole does not have a bunker (par 3). Two have blind approaches. Three are hole #10, three are hole #4. If you are 1,2,7,9,11,15, sorry, you didn't make it.  Twice, holes are just a few miles from each other, one's nearest neighbor is thousands of miles away. One opened last year, two in the 70s, the others are all a lot older. Pennsylvania was shut out. One hole has been surrounded by guesses. This will be modified as guesses occur and more brain cells kick in. Four are not covered in GCA Courses by Countries entries. Augusta National is the only course with two choices. The courses featuring the remaining par 3 and par 4 have not (to my knowledge) been on live US television for a tournament, and both have undergone revision, or restoration, or renovation since 2000. The remaining par 3 and par 5 are in GB&I, but in different countries. The remaining par 4 is in the US, and is in a state not previously guessed.

As we are down to one par 5, we have established it is on a moden The Open venue, has OB, does not have water, and previous guesses have named the course, but not this hole.

They're all picked.
As they are answered, I will post in reply #1.

3rd at Rustic Canyon ...

I'd assume that like any other archie, he would pick one of his own designs ...

Mike, No Rustic isn't included, I almost put in that dislaimer in the original post, which is being modified as guesses are made.

Guesses already have one hole surrounded.

I have always said that NGLA is a great match play course and Shinnecock is a great stroke play course.  Match play holes at NGLA that stick out....1,2,3,5,7,11,14,17,18.

IMO #17 at TPC is a lousy match play hole!

Garland,
It is if you are one down and on the tee, but I concede you may have a point of argument.

To this point three courses have been mentioned, but the 'wrong' hole chosen.

Well, we must be missing something from Pine Valley.  What about #13.

I'm also going to guess that short two shotter at Oakmont (is it #16?  I forget).

Two great candidates for the long par 4 category:

Sand Hills #4
Sand Hills #18

With 1 par 3 left and the mention that one does not have a bunker, then the only one not yet listed does not have a bunker, unless 'waste area' isn't counted as a bunker.

Down to two courses that have been pre-mentioned,with Pine Valley chosen. Sand Hills didn't make the list, per my "age" qualifiers. The remaining par 3 is waterless, bunkerless in any fashion. Last time I checked, Oakmont and HVCC were still in Pennsylvania.

Recap, we are down to five choices, three in the US and two in GB&I. Two courses have been named, but the hole queries was 'wrong'. The hole that opened last year is still up for grabs.
