Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland

I have a good friend going to play this classic Herbert Strong course next week. what are the thoughts and are there any pictures of it? Also did the renovations change the character of the course?

Tiger, I don't know that I have the detail that you are looking for, but I played it a couple of times.  It is a very good course with a great set of opening few holes.  The first hole and the finishing holes are very difficult.  #'s 1 and 18 are long tough par 4's and I really enjoyed the short par 4 second.  Despite its great history, it is struggling like most of the clubs in the Cleveland market.

I saw Nicklaus win a PGA there in 1973, I think.  As I recall, the par 3s are challenging.  From what I heard from others who've played, the course has been changed over the years.  Though it still has the classic feel, nice terrain, and mature trees, it probably belongs at the bottom of the top 10 in Ohio, which is very good considering how rich that state is at the top.

What do you mean that it is struggling?  Does it not have a multi-year waiting list?  Any information on the membership details?  I thought that Cleveland had made a huge turn around in the late 80s and 90s.  Has it gone backwards since?

Lou, You can relax. Cleveland's woes will not impact the Buckeye recruiting budget. And certainly will not help Texas this weekend against Ohio State.

Lou, almost all of the clubs in the Cleveland area are struggling (not uncommon in many parts of the country).  Look at the merging of Sand Ridge and Mayfield.  No, there is no waitlist at Canterbury.

Tiger-I had the pleasure of playing Canterbury earlier this summer. I cannot help you as far as how the character of the course has changed over the years but I can tell you that your friend is in for an enjoyable round. As I recall, most of the greens are canted from back to front with minimal internal contours. Keeping the ball below the hole is a wise idea.  Canterbury does have some of the best false fronts that I can remember:  #2 and #10 (a neat short par four) come to mind. The final three holes are justly celebrated as the heart and soul of the course but there is some interesting stuff elsewhere. Dan Taylor is right about #1-a sweeping dogleg right. I also liked the short par four #10. My favorite hole was #15: a par four with a tee shot slightly downhill then an approach over a ravine up to a green perched some 40-50 feet above the initial segment of fairway (a small segment of fairway bridges the gap between the precipice and the green). You don't see holes like that being built anymore.

Canterbury is a great old U.S. Open course and a treat for anybody lucky enough to play there.  There is history and wonderful ambiance and the course is both fun and excellent.  Watch out if the greens are really fast.

It's an enjoyable course to play.

I can't comment on any changes since I haven't played it in
27 years.

Its been a few years since I played the course so I may not have played the course since the most recent renovations. The course I played four or five years ago had undergone changes to it original bunkers (unfortunately), but it still retained the most intersting aspect of the course IMO which was the fairway contouring - like Engineers it is really striking.

Bill and Lou, congratulations on a big win over the Horns yesterday. I saw it coming as per my earlier post. One Dr. Steve Katz noted the chance of LSU/Ohio State for all the marbles. I think we are made of the right stuff this year and if we can win all the big road games, starting this week at Auburn, then the championship game will be ours.

If LSU can navigate their schedule, they shouldn't even be forced to play a title game, it should be theirs already.


Canterbury is one of my favorite golf experiences. The back is spectacular and the opening tee shot is the most demanding opener in the world. The middle of the front features some just average holes, but the rest are fabulous!!!
