Re:Can the Knoll Club come close to Bethpage Black for NYC denizens?

Phil:

Go back to the early 80's when Bethpage did in fact itemize to the public the capital improvements they sought to make. The original focus was on improving the turf quality of the Black and in upgrading the sad condition of the bunkers. If you seek out back issues of The Met Golfer from that time frame you'll see mention of what I just said.

I can remember a number of times when playing Bethpage during the early 80's reading posted flyers -- and they were readily available for people to take with them -- itemizing what work was being planned and the related time table for completion. First, the emphasis was on the Black and then flyers were produced itemizing the nature of the proposed work for the Green Course.

This is clearly long before the push for the US Open and all the ensuing things that have happened since then.

It makes me wonder why the practice stopped and why other courses in the public realm don't follow suit.

Played Knoll West yesterday--the 2nd time I have played it.  Again, it was a lot of fun.  Course is in good shape considering all the rain this spring.  Greens were fast enough to be fun--but could've safely been a bit faster.  They are very good.

Walking is allowed after 330.  A big tree which blocked most of the left side of the fairway on #1 has been cut down.  #13 is still only a half biarritz green.

The course finally has a website--albeit one with only a couple pictures of the course.

Given the recent rains that have hammered the Northern NJ and metro NYC region what was the overall moisture content like -- especially on the front after you played the short par-3 6th ?

In regards to your comments on the greens -- the reality is that far too often the greens are way too slow and you have to give it a shoulder turn on any putt beyond 30 feet.

Thanks for the link to their Website ...

A few of the fairways were a bit soggy-especially the tree-lined ones like #11.  Most were fine, although firmer and faster would have been better, but can't be expected with all the rain.
