Tobiano Golf Course, Kamloops BC (Thomas McBroom)
« on: July 18, 2006, 12:51:12 AM »
Here are some pictures of the Tobiano Golf Course taken last week. I am not trying to “sell” this course in anyway, I just work on the construction crew and thought some of you might be interested in seeing some pictures of it.

The course is located on Kamloops Lake in central British Columbia.

I'm assuming the site is to the west of town on the south shore of the lake?

Andrew
This is a very impressive site – incredible views.
How long will the golfing season be there ?
What kind of material are lining the bunkers in you last picture? Is that a soil mat ?
Cheers
John

Andrew,

You have been busy with your camera!

As Chris was asking, where is this in relation to the town? In the future, a trip to Sagebrush and then here and a few others would make for a great weekend.

For those not familiar with the area, conditions make many courses in the Okanagan and thereabouts playable from April through October. Direct flights from Seattle to Kamloops and to Kelowna on Horizon.

Bob,

The Tobiano site is the former Six Mile Ranch. It's on the Trans-Canada Highway heading west (toward Vancouver) from Kamloops. Maybe 20 minutes drive from downtown Kamloops.

Andrew:  That looks like a beautiful place to go to work every day.

Is there development to be built between the holes or will the course retain its open look?

Tom,

(I hate to answer again for Andrew, but...) I've been to the property. Once with McBroom, actually. It is a beautiful spot.

There's a LARGE residential component at Tobiano. I haven't seen the actual plans on paper, but I'm pretty sure the course will NOT retain its open look.

Perhaps Andrew can elaborate.

John: Under the sand in the bunkers is just packed sub grade material. There is no lining being put under the sand. One interesting thing about the design of the bunkers is that the edges are extremely “wiggly” and have very shallow lips around their edges. The sand is supposed to blend right in to the grass more or less. McBroom starting doing this style of bunkers on his last two courses (Firerock and Ambassador). He was on site today and we are all wondering how the poor superintendent is going to maintain these things without going nuts  ;D

Tom: The course does have a big residential development planned with it as Jeff mentioned (thanks for answering some of the questions by the way Jeff). Right now the holes look awesome as they go through the open fields, and I cringe at the thought of houses along some of them. All in all though, the golf course gets most of the water views (there are no houses between the holes and the water on #1-9, 14, 15-- and several other holes have unobstructed views)

---On another interesting note, construction of another Thomas McBroom course in central BC will be starting this fall in Kelowna. I have not seen the site but it will be similar to the one in Kamloops (dry terrain with lake views). I have heard the site in Kelowna doesn’t have as nice views as this course but that the views are more “expensive.”

Here is the site plan for Tobiano (Kamloops)

The front 9 (holes 1 and 9 on left)

The back 9 (top left to right: 16, 17, 18, 9. bottom left to right:13, 12, 11, 10, 1)
