If Tour Pros Know the Most about Strategy and ....

...think their way around a golf course better than everybody, then they should be the best golf course architects.

So given a choice of five architects for five courses how many tour pros would you pick?

Coore and Crenshaw for sure but only 50% pro.

I don't think I'd go for any of the big names, maybe Mike Clayton though.

Your conclusion does not follow from your assertion. There is no reason to believe that the ability to choose the correct shots during a round of golf implies an ability to design great golf courses.

It's akin to saying that an airline pilot with 25,000 hours flying a 747 in all kinds of weather should be the best qualified person to design the next Boeing airliner. Or for that matter that you want the designer of the 747 to be the guy flying the one you're on during a thunderstorm. Not true at all.

Yes I believe that golf ability is not a good indicator of an ability to design good courses, but is there not an impression amongst the general golf public that this is the case?

Brent -

An even better analogy might be that someone who is great at solving crossword puzzles is by no means guaranteed to be very good at designing them. Two different skill sets are involved.

By the way, anyone who enjoys crossword puzzles should see the movie/documentary "Wordplay." Actually, It is worth seeing even if you don't do crossword puzzles.

Oh certainly. I misunderstood your point.

Unless I start shooting lower scores, I might have to. But for the moment, no.
