The Links Club will reopen in September
« on: July 12, 2006, 02:09:53 PM »
Well not the one in Long Island, but the one in Manhattan. Founded by CB Macdonald, The Links Club has been the site of a GCA dinner or two and was located next door to the townhouse which was blown up by the guy going through the bitter divorce. I am told it will re-open in September as it appears that it faired better than some of the firefighters and passerbys who were near the building when it was blown up.

Quick question - I had never heard of the Links Club... can you tell us more about this establishment?
Thanks!

It was founded by CB Mac to be a "City Clubhouse" of sorts for his golf clubs (National, Piping, The Creek, Yale, The Links....). Today, there is still remnants of its origins including a huge portrait of CB Mac in one of the main rooms and a very nice library with some great old photos. However, it is more of a business lunch and dinner club at this point, but it is still a member of The Met and you can keep your GHIN number there as a member club.

Sad that a wackjob participant in a divorce case had to threaten the lives of so many others in his alleged scheme.  I don't know the history of the Links club but it is a town club for golfers organized by CB Macdonald.  It has a nice library and dining rooms.  I attended a delightful dinner there one evening with some GCA regulars on our way back from Long Island.

That's a really neat concept! I'm aware of Union, Harvard, Yale, etc... of the college associated men's clubs but had never heard of the Links.

I take it that its not an easy membership to obtain? Wondering what the out of town membership rates are (might be traveling to NYC a lot more)?

Best,
Chip

Question........

In Clifford Wendehack's 1929 book,  'Golf and Country Clubs' there is an illustration of the  "Golfers' Club" in downtown NYC.     The Golfers' Club was designed by Wendehack and the book says nothing else (date, clubs, etc.) about the downtown building.

Is the Links Club same as the Golfers' Club ?   Just curious.

Google did not yield any help.   Wendehack was involved in many clubhouse buildings throughout the 20s and was a famed clubhouse architect.
