I'm taking a trip with my wife in August down to Raleigh, NC to visit some family.  While there, I will probably have a chance to play two rounds of golf.  I definitely want to play Tobacco Road - my question is if I should play it twice or if there is another public course within 45 minutes or so of the city that I should play as well.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Although it was not in good condition when I played there last year, The Pit (Dan Maples) is a very interesting design. Tobacco is great. You will have a ball.

There are a multitude of public courses in the Triangle area, some very good.  But there is nothing that will match Tobacco Road hole-for-hole and dollar-for-dollar if you are willing to make that drive twice.

Golf in that neck of the woods in August is a bit uncomfortable. Of course I don't doubt your toughness, but how acclimated is your wife to high heat and humidity? (Go ahead, insert typical male chauvanistic barefoot in the kitchen joke here).

Definitely play TR- its a lot of fun.

For a second round, I recommed the UNC course (35 min from downtown).  It is quite similar to Pinehurst #4.

-The Neuse

I would play Tobacco Road twice, I almost think it's a necessity.  You will enjoy it more the second time around.  My maiden voyage around TR was truly mind breaking, but still very enjoyable.  I also played Duke's Course and The Heritage.  They were nothing to write home about IMHO, and will be a serious dissappointment if you play them after TR.  I cannot remember how far the drive is, but in Winston-Salem Tanglewood Park (championship) is a good course.  I happen to really like it.

It'll take an hour plus to get to Winston from Raleigh, more if I-40 is bad, which it certainly can be; many other good options toward Pinehurst and even around Raleigh itself.

Tot Hill Farm

Strantz has another course in the area. When I visited last year, I played both and I would recommend to others to do the same, play Tot Hill first and when you go to Tobacco Road, make sure they pair you with someone who has played there before so they can explain some of the blind drives and what to hit and where.

Someone did that for me, so I didn't feel the need for the 2nd round to get famaliar.

TR is one of my alltime favorites, so if you can't play THF, then play TB twice, but..playing THF first will introduce you to Strantz, and you will get a much fuller education of his terrific body of work.

While not Raleigh golf, Souther Pines GC, a good example of Donald Ross, is just another 15-20 minutes past Tobacco Road.
