Pinehurst 1 & 3
« on: June 08, 2006, 12:46:32 PM »
Headed to Charlotte on business next month and thinking about staying over and visiting Pinehurst for the first time.  Hopefully hooking up with Papa Gracely at Tobacco Road.  Leaning toward Southern Pines and Pinehurst 1 or 3 just to keep it frugal and simple.  Maybe walk #2 late one evening if permitted.  Thoughts on 1 & 3?  Thanks.

Thanks, Paul.  I guess I'm more interested in hearing if 1 & 3 are "the genuine article" than if I'll be thrilled or not.  I'm blessed to have had my mountain-top experience for the year.

Play 3 over 1, 3 is short but has a great set of Ross greens.  Lots of fun to play.

redanman,

You don't really expect a hillbilly to google those fancy French words, do you?  All I learned in French class at good ole' Ripley High was "may I go to the rest room."  A hall pass if you will.

Southern Pines (with Ran and his hickories if possible), Mid-Pines and the Road are a formidable trio.  I too preferred the routing at Mid-Pines, loved all the hilltop tee to hilltop green holes.

#1 begins and ends with a series of very ordinary holes but in between there is some very good topography and interesting short holes.  #3 is a combination of some original Ross holes, a couple of unknown (at least by me) origin, and a few Maples add-ons. When the #5 was built, some of the original #3 holes were borrowed (2, 3, 4, 6?, 7, 8, and 9) leaving #3  half Ross and half Ellis Maples.

The greens on #3 were resurfaced a year ago and they are much more consistent. However the course gets a lot of play and it is not maintained with firm/fast as a priority. #1 and #3 are easy to walk but if I was spending my money, it would go to Mid-Pines.

#3 has some charming holes, but horrible housing throughout - built in the 1970's. #3 would be a fun course to play with hickories - greens are quite interesting.

I think #1 is a fine golf course and should not be overlooked.

#3 does have some great greens.  #1 is an interesting course.  If you are going to be there in July, you might catch one of the North & South Amateur (men/women compete in different weeks) events.  It might be interesting to walk #2 during the competition.
