Walton Heath Old Pictures
« on: April 30, 2006, 07:10:11 PM »
I believe Pete Lavallee posted a nice photo tour of Walton Heath about a year ago.  To those who missed it here are some current photos.

Walton Heath enjoys are far more open and expansive feeling than Sunningdale or Woodhall Spa, and while the youngest of the three it somehow feels the oldest and most traditional.

Short and right of #1 on the Old Course.

Short and right of the newly remodelled bunker fronting the drivable par 4 3rd hole.

Approaching the par 4 4th green.

Par 4 5th green

Deep fairway bunkers left of the long par 4 6th.

Approaching the par 4 9th green.

The classic par 4 10th.

Par 3 11th

No not Myopia Hunt!  Fairway bunker at the 12th.

The 12th green.  First horses, now dogs.  I think we would all love to be able to bring our dogs to the course with us.

Par 5 14th

View from the tee of the Par 4 16th, perhaps the best of the exceptional final five holes.

View from the 16th fairway

The 16th green has but one bunker.  When it is 8' deep that is all that is needed to dictate play!

Love the look of the vegetation on the faces of some of these bunkers. Tell me: is it possible to play a shot out of that stuff? If not, is it a good idea to have it there?

I was looking at my old photos from 1989 and a lot of the heather around the bunkers is gone. I was stunned at how much.

This is such a great course that has to be played to be enjoyed properly. The third is such an enchanting hole, but there is no way for a picture to do it justice.

Matt's done a wonderful job highlighting how a single bunker to one side of the fairway or green can dominate play. Those rugged bunkers provide the necessary measure of punishment for those who challange the line of charm to the hole!

Jim, you can play out of the heather, but the result can be hard to judge; blast away and hope for some measure of solid contact.

Just for clarification, Is heather the lavendarish plant along many of the bunkers on Walton Heath?  Whatever, it is, it makes for a great appearance.

For superintendent's, would it be possible to grow it in the proper regions of the United States?

Certainly if the weather permits. It is found throughout Europe from the Scottish Highlands to Medoc in the south of France. The key is never feed and keep dry. The soil must be impoverished or grass will take over. Interestingly it doesn't have to be a sandy soil or acid and WH is a good example of this; clay over chalk.

I'd be interested to see some of the older pictures. Were the bunker faces always so vertical and did they revet (sod wall) them? It's certainly one hell of a course and one that I must revisit soon.

As I've just mentioned over in the Woodhall Spa thread, these photos hardly begin to show what a fun course Walton Heath (Old) is, whereas WS looks rather better than it plays, in my humble opinion. (Nothing against the photographer - it's a very difficult course to capture in pictures!) The only downside for me about WH is its proximity to the M25 motorway, which makes playing the course a rather noisy experience. But I would still rate WH among my two or three favourite courses in the Heathlands, at least from the one time I've played it.

Cheers,
Darren

I played Walton Heath (new) last week and my only disappointment was that the heather was not yet in bloom. Great photos, a really terrific couple of courses, and one of the best practice putting greens I've ever been on. -Dan

Don't fight about Walton Heath, Woodhall Spa, Ganton, Sunningdale or any other of our heathland courses.  Enjoy them all for their individuality!

nice photos of a great course that is imho underrated. perhaps the last great course in europe that hosted a ryder cup (yes valderrama is very good but not as good as WH) in 1981. can hardly wait to get back there again. agree that it is much more aesthetically pleasing when the heather is in bloom. love the logo as well.
