Google Maps - WOW
« on: April 25, 2006, 09:03:42 AM »
Look, I know Las Vegas golf is generally not much to write home about but the detail of Google's aerials of the Vegas area is stunning - the highest resolution of any metro area that I've seen.

Checking out Paiute Wolf, Shadow Creek, Wynn and Dragon's Ridge was pretty cool.

Love it!

Makes me think back to the fall of 2000 and my one and only tour around those grand holes.  What a neat place!

Tim, Tyler and Martin,

Can you get PV on a click bar ?

It would be interesting to view it in conjunction with Paul Turner's wonderful photos.

Patrick,

If by "click bar" you mean a link, then;

Tyler,

Yes, I meant link.

Is it possible to zoom in closer, like the aerial of the Chicago Golf club ?

Is it also possible to get a topo ?

That would help with the elevation changes and discussions concerning the restoration of skyline greens

Thanks

Patrick,

No and yes. Terraserver has higher resolution aerial photography for certain cities, like Chicago, but not Philadelphia. If you want topography lines, then zoom out one square to the left of the image. After doing so, the top right corner will have a tab for a topo map. Unfortunately, no hybrid exists, where you can see the contours on top of the aerial.

Patrick,

There is an aerial picture you can find by entering Clementon,NJ.  It's dated 1995.  It does not get down to much detail.  There is an associated topo map from 1981 at a bit greater resolution, but as Tyler points out you can't combine the two.  If you were willing to do the work you could print out the aerial and print the topo on a transparency and overlay it manually.  There are enough reference points to match if you could get both at the same scale.

If you want a better aerial, go to www.maps.google and search on Clementon,NJ and zoom in the satellite view.  You can get pretty decent resolution at the level of one hole per screen.

If you use the Google Earth tool instead of terraserver you can see some "relief" on those maps...not quite a topo but probably as good as you're gonna get.
