I thought that I would get a response on the "shotgun Start"  >:(idea. ;D I have had enough of them and concur with you guys on that. I threw it out there to stir some discussion. Don't worry. If I have anythiong to do with any organization of an event being proposed, the only way to go is 1st tee only. The architect hopefully intended a 1st tee start to move you into the round in the best way.

What began with a flurry of saber rattling and posturing - including discussions on team uniforms (i.e. what color Hawaiian shirts and brand of cigars to match our fearless leader Dan King) - now stands as proof of the flaky nature of Californians.

Let me consider this for a day or two. Apache Stronghold is another ideal location for winter golf, but the town is wretched.

That said, a distinguished gathering such as this will require no additional entertainment beyond a cheesy Indian Gaming Casino and well stocked bar. Perhaps a 36 hole day and evening (a Friday?) there, followed by a caravan back to Phoenix and a round at Talking Stick?

Opinions please. I am happy to actually bring this to fruition  provided I get some assistance from Brains and the Leprechaun.

Each corner of the country can appoint a group leader (i.e. Bernhardt in the South, Bill Spellman in the Northeast) to help coordinate travel.

Does March work for everyone? We will pick a date and move forward. Perhaps we can pitch in to fly "Golf's Most Beloved Figure" and his little brother  ;)  to thank them for bringing us together.

Either way would be

would be... would be... I can't stand the suspense!   ;)

Oh Great Armenian Leader, I stand ready to assist in any manner you require.  And sure, March gives me enough time to beg.  I like the AZ idea too - I've yet to play Apache Stronghold or Talking Stick and they are each on my MUST list indeed.  SoCal works too in this respect also - IF it means the venue is RUSTIC CANYON... I'd venture to say one and all on this DG would make the trip to LA for that.  Whaddya think?

I've been to Apache Stronghold, I've been to Talking Stick and I've been to Barona.  But, I'd go back to any of them.  March may work, depending on what happens job wise for me by then.  Rustic Canyon would be awesome if it is ready.  Even if it isn't, perhaps we could play somewhere near there and get the grand tour.

Then again there are a couple of courses on the Oregon coast I could see us meeting at.

Gib,
I like the Apache Stronghold idea, of course I live in AZ 8)
But seriously, it is easy on the pocket book and with travel what it is right now, there are some cheap flights to AZ out there. Plus, my Bro is making good progress with the course and I think everyone would be pleasantly suprised at the improved conditions.

How bout this? We do an ad campaign for Clorox using all the bleach we can find to get out those nasty ground in dirt from playing out of creek beds and other watery graves. Then no one has to worry about travel expenses. ;D

Gib,

I love the Apache Stronghold idea.  As you well know, I have a different opinion of Mr. Doak's work than most on this site.  The only Doak courses I have seen are High Pointe (After the changes that many say caused it to go downhill).  Quail Crossing which never had an uphill period to fall down from and the one in Myrtle Beach which is no more than better than average.  I would love to see a Doak that so many of you love and decide if I have just not been lucky enough to see his good stuff or I think that you all refuse to see that the emperor is naked.  Bring it on and I'll do all I can to find a way there.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

you certainly won't have outside diversions at AP!!

several plusses are inexpensive  greens fees, plenty of affordable housing choices, walking permitted, a very interesting design to fuel the discussions, warm weather @3500 ft???, and plenty of optional courses to play in phoenix....

minuses would be dreadful food, (though it's said there is a "decent " steakhouse in Globe) no blakjack, (just keno, poker and slots), and the location 90 miles from phoenix....

the earlier  a decision is made , the easier it will be for all (esp  easterners) to arrange their schedules

Apache Stronghold is a fine choice in March for me. I've played it before and would love to see again. Would also recommend Wolf Creek at Paradise Canyon (Mesquite, NV) and the nearby St. George area. Real good alternatives and close to Vegas for easy drive.

Let me also offer an eastern option with Forsgate / Banks Course in Jamesburg, NJ for the month of May or June. Ideally located halfway between NYC and Phillie and halfway between Boston and DC areas. One of the most underrated Banks designs period.

Does that work??? :D

Happy to make a contribution to such a fine site for true golf addicts one and all.

Gib,
I'm up for the AZ courses which I haven't played yet and was planning on seeing this spring anyway. Let me know how I can assist with the plans in any way. I like the airplane ticket idea for the men who made this great site happen too. Hopefully we can establish a date by the beginning of the year so I can finesse my schedule. I'm taking advantage of the Bandon Dunes package in January.

When setting the date in March, keep in mind spring break from school is at the end of the month and may affect peoples ability to travel if they have children. See you Sunday with the guys at Pajaro. :)

My thoughts are:  I am most interested to see AS and I would like it as deep into winter as possible (February?).  But if March, I'd do my best to make it then (even though I may have to schedule around teacher wife's spring break and an anniversary)  ::)   I don't see why we wouldn't schedule a day or two at Globe and other time nearer Phoenix to take in other courses as well.

My second choice is clearly Barona Creek.  It would be possible to do BC and then have the group hop over the next day to sample the "new and improved" Torrey Pines  :o.

I am against Rustic Canyon at that time because it would not in all probability or practicality be mature enough yet, even if officially open.  It is so good, that I wouldn't want it subjected to the critique of this group until turf conditions can allow for the super to adjust it to firm and fast after a proper grow-in that tends to have to be fully fertilized and watered.  I'd save RC for late fall or early 2003 if it were up to me.

Not to worry, Dick.  By the time this group gets anything planned, we'll be calling Rustic Canyon a "classic course."

Seriously - I had heard it opens in May 2002.  I have SERIOUS doubts anyone's gonna get something scheduled significantly in advance of that.  Given all of our interest in RC, what's the harm of trying to set something up there, either after it opens or perchance slightly before that?  We'd trust the principles to advise us re turf conditions.... if it's not ready, it ain't gonna open, correct?  And even if it's not "mature", I'm not of a mind to wait - if I can play it I'm going there anyway, with or without you blokes!  With you would sure be more fun...

Archipalooza was held in March(?) at Pacific Dunes, over 3 months before it officially opened, and conditions seemed to be passable enough to get it ranked #18 in the U.S.

The only way something will be scheduled is if someone takes charge and does the leg work.  No, I wasn't volunteering, as this right-coaster has potentially two other left coast trips next spring, so I can't come, unless they per chance overlap.

Scott - good points all around.

I AM volunteering to do the leg work.  What the hell, I strangely enjoy this.  My problem is I personally am NOT part of the in crowd to get invited to an Archipalooza, so whatever I plan will likely get crushed by that in terms of interest... but I'll see what I can get going at Rustic anyway.  I want to get there.  This can exist for whomever wants it, take it or leave it.  Stay tuned.

Hopefully the dates will work....let us know if there is anything anyone can do to help.....

For those in the Mid Atlantic, Philly or wherever I am after a date, preferably a Friday, at Tom Doak's Beechtree in mid May or June. More details after the holidays. I need to hear from anyone that might be interested due to reservations, meals.
By the way it isn't too far from Bule Rock, (Saturday? :D )

I would definitely be interested if a) the dates work and b) I have permission from home.

Bulle Rock is something like 5-10 minutes away, but not cheap ($145).

Tom,
I was just down at Rustic this past weekend. My in-laws have a house less than a mile away (lucky me!) :) I don't know how long it takes grass to grow in, but from what I saw I don't think Rustic will be open in May (at least not the front nine). The course looks great and the green contours are some of the best I've seen in a while and anyone who shows up without their short game is going to have a tough day. Any time you want to look around down there let me know and we'll make a road trip. 4-1/2 hours and we're there, free room and board and after taking a look around we could go over to Lost Canyon which is a few miles away. See you Sunday at Pajaro. :)

Bill and all, Thank you for the kind words. In truth, the honor is all mine considering your schooling and tutalege at UBK. (University of Bill Kittleman-One of the finest institutions in the land)

Lack of anytime after work is my problem right now, when it comes to organizing anything. Tell me where we are going and I am there. (Work withstanding unfortunately.)

Scott, What ranking put Pacific Dunes at #18?
