My own list includes The Addington but my friend and his group have a lower "quirk quotient" (say that five times quickly) than my own. Perhaps my impression is exaggerated but I'd fear a few too many blind shots and lost golf balls there. Do you think I'm over-reacting a bit?

[EDIT] Let me add this. Lest I give the impression that a course that punishes off-line shots is a no-no, these guys are the sort of golfers who would happily play Pine Valley every day for a week (and one of them probably has on occasion).

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, for a couple nights I'll be staying at a B&B right down the street from Betchworth Park which is how the course caught my attention. Areas surrounding London have very high-resolution satellite images available through http://maps.google.com so I was looking around the area between Dorking and Reigate. I think I found a picture of the B&B but more interestingly I was following the two railroad lines that cross in Dorking, one of them "Southern" and the other "First Great Western".

So if you want to see something neat zoom in on the area along Reigate Road on the eastern edge of Dorking and look for the N-S railroad (Southern) that cross the E-W one (First Great Western). Just south of that crossing the Southern line runs along the edge of Betchworth Park golf course. Switch to the satellite view and you'll see the railroad disappear for about 400 yards and going right over the top of it is a fairway. I'm guessing that Par 5 passes over the crest of a hill and the railroad goes through a tunnel under the hill. Cool!

I wonder if you can feel the putting green shake under your feet when a train goes through...

[EDIT] By the way, regarding the recent thread on "extra holes", there's an extra Par 3 at Betchworth Park right beside the Par 3 second hole. They are also on top of the hill with the railway tunnel underneath.

Chart Hills is also in the vicinity.  I was going to play there with one of our GCA gents until the plug was pulled on my 2005 Buda Cup outing.  I have heard good things about Chart Hills.

Bill,

I've read the good words about Chart Hills, too. If I have time for a modern course on my itenerary it will be that one for sure.

Ummm, I think it's time for an early lunch.

Actually, I'll be arriving at Gatwick around 8:30AM. Once I clear customs and whatnot it'll be around 10:00-ish and I'll have several hours before I can check in to the B&B and take a nap. I think I'll head straight to Betchworth Park for lunch and maybe a quick nine holes.
