Marucci Named Walker Cup Captain
« on: February 02, 2006, 01:28:52 PM »
There was some talk about Buddy on here a few weeks ago after the Golf channel showed replays of his match against Tiger Woods.

Seems like a pretty strong and deserving choice.

any chance of Tom Paul being named assistant captain ;)

That's great news, Buddy is certainly deserving of the honor.

Such young men are named as Captains these days.... But why would Tom Paul be assisting him?  Surely he'll qualify for the team of right.  This man, Hurley of Nebraska or Nevada (well it's somewhere that starts Nev, maybe it's Never-Never Land), he keeps telling me about is actually TEP in disguise.  200 mph club head speed, 400-yard carries.  TEP did all this when we played together last year at Gulph Mills.  He drove it so far and walked after the ball so imperiously that he didn't notice that I actually played four balls and 24 shots to reach his drive, from which he struck a lob wedge to reach the green of each par 5 and I managed to make the green in a further 14 before he sank his eagle putt and I holed out for an 84.  I think he managed to win that match, but I swear it wasn't by much......

And we saw your tricks at the last Curtis Cup sneaking in men such as Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer.  We're going to sneak some women into out team for the next Walker Cup - that'll settle your hash!

Sorry, it wasn't Gulbis, it was just somebody who looked like him...sorry, her.

Great Choice!! We might actually win two in a row in a team competition for once.

Finally moved north of the Mason-Dixon like most of your better High School football players.  ;)

Congratulations to Buddy Marucci.  I hope he leads us to victory at Royal County Down.  Do you think they'd let him be captain again at one of his home courses in 2009?

I read in today's Inquirer that the Walker Cup captain usually does it for two cups in a row.  Which means if all goes well that Buddy will be the captain for the 2009 Walker Cup at Merion GC.  That should be a special tournament in one more way.

Will the Walker Cup team members be driving Mercedes courtesy cars from Buddy's dealerships?  ;D

There is no doubt that Buddy is first and foremost a gentleman; also a fine player with an accomplished amateur record.  He experienced a run over the course of 12 or so months that is the envy of every amateur who tees it up.  From battling Tiger to representing his country in the Walker Cup, he certainly warrants consideration as a future captain, cerainly at Merion in 2009.
That said, no one deserves the breaking of tradition by receiving a third term as captain more than Bob Lewis.  His amateur record is as good as any (and deserves inclusion in the Top 10 Amateur career thread).  His two terms as captain brought a victory and a narrow loss.  He represented our country and amateur golf with the utmost class and integrity.
With events like the Walker, Ryder and Curtiss Cups more competitive that ever, it seems a shame to me that we change captains for no particular reason.
The Euros certainly rode Jacklin as far as they could.

Gordon,

Mr. Lewis was a wonderful Captain and I am sure a great guy. You could see the feelings that he had for the kids and vice versa. I thought I remember hearing him say that this would be his last. I don't know if he sounded up to it again. Just a guess, but if Marucci is the plan for Merion, then maybe the USGA would like to get him some experience first. I don't think the US would be favored in 07, with what we lost and what they have returning and coming up. It is certainly a possibility that some players will develop for the US between now and then, but right now I would say the US will have its hands full.

Anyone who is considering a UK or Ireland trip in 2007 should really give some thought to attending the Walker Cup at Royal County Down.

The Walker Cup at Chicago Golf Club last summer was probably the most fun competition I've ever attended.  No ropes, walk down the fairway with the players, really close.  All match play so no grinding, lots of exciting risk taking golf by great young players.

The match between Anthony Kim and Gary Wolstenholme might have been the most interesting singles match ever.  Young Kim belted the ball 50-80 yards past GW all day, but lost 1 down to an older, cagier competitor.

Once in North Ireland, there are a lot of great courses to play, and I think there are ferries from Belfast across to Scotland for the hard core.
