Inspired by Mark Rowlinson's "Which course is this?" series, and my fascination with Google Earth, I wanted to start a new series of threads using frame captures of famous golf courses (using only the high-res pictures from Google Earth, which limits the areas quite a bit)  :(

Unlike Mark, I'm only going to do one of these a week, and I'll post the answer a week later.

See if you can identify the course from the air, and IM me with your answer.

Hopefully the first one will be fairly easy!

Chris - that one is easy - with it's religious bunkers and all.

One thing:  you do know Scott Burroughs did a series of about 200 of these, right?  He called it "Aerial of the Day".  So while the effort is appreciated, well... understand most of us will have seen the aerials before.

If this course were built today, don't you think that most architects would put a par 3 over that pond?

Move a little over a mile to the southwest and you'll see my apartment.

There are more bunkers there now and less trees.

Huck, I believe that was 456 AOTD for Scott.  That was a major achievement for any poster of GCA.com...

RJD - thanks - I knew that 200 sounded light.  Mr. Burroughs, my humble apologies.  Oh hell yes, in terms of contributions to the site, that has to rank in the absolute pantheon.

Thanks for the mention, guys.

436 by me, 20 by my vacation substitute, Mike Nuzzo.

If capturing (and thus assembling) the aerials was as easy then as it is now, I'd have spent probably at least 50% less time on it, but c'est la vie.

Chris,

My original AOTD of this course was here

and the updated color version was here

Looking forward to seeing it on TV next year.

So, guys, I guess I should discontinue this thread?  I suppose that there aren't too many people, such as myself, that have joined this DG since 2003?  It was not my intention to imitate anyone.  I haven't been around long....
My apologies.

Chris - sorry man - didn't mean it to come out that way - hell if you want to do this, it will surely be fun.  I just wanted you to know that this had been done before.  But good point... man I had forgotten how much time has gone by since Scott stopped doing his.  Time does fly.

Fire away.  It's always fun.

George Pazin - no way this course is better than Pebble Beach.

I think I will continue this!  Like Tom says, it is fun, even if you've seen them before. ;D  And I'm only going to do one a week, not one a day....

Chris,

Scott's fine efforts from a few years ago focused mainly on American designs, with an occasional aerial from the UK. Perhaps you could expand the aerials you profile to capture a more worldwide perspective.

I'd like to cover a lot of great courses from around the world.  Like I said earlier, it all depends on whether I can get a good high-resolution shot from Google Earth.  I'll do my best!

There also were quite a few on Scott's not availble list...
One a week is a good idea.

So when will you post the answer?...   ;D

I'd also like to see the new aerial when it gets updated in a few years.

The west course sure doesn't get the attention of the east.

The fairways look too narrow.

Love the 9th green.

Cheers

Chris,

Please, go ahead with more, regardless if it's a repeat or not.  If it's something I haven't done, I'll get to guess for a change  :)  (BTW, many of the ones I listed as not available when I finished my original run are now available, and I have since captured and put together....I just never got off my duff to post them).

I focused mostly on US courses basically because that's just about all there was available then (that I knew of....there were some in Scotland, but it was scant and would have been very laborious to capture, cut, and paste).

I look forward to your future posts.

Re:Can you identify this course? 1...Soon to be "Aerial of the Week"
« Reply #16 on: January 31, 2006, 12:14:28 PM »
I've been thinking a bit about the future of this thread.  First of all, with Scott Borroughs' blessing, I'm going to change the name to "Aerial of the week".  I really don't like the current name, which I came up with without much thought.

I've also got some courses picked out already for future weeks.  Some of them are quite difficult to identify solely from the aerial, I think.  I going to try to get a variety of international courses, as well as a variety of architects.

I think that the first day I post the aerial, which will be a Monday usually, I will post only the photograph.  On Tuesday I will add another clue, which will most likely be the architect.  I will follow up with another clue each day, probably geographically or historically-related, until I have 5 clues on the original post for the week.

Does anyone have any comments/suggestions on this?

Scott - you get  "the guy who accrues but never uses vacation" award for your efforts ... 450 or so AOTDs, weekdays of course, is a little less than two years, and only 20 vacations days?  Hopefully your boss and the HR department is reading this ... ;)

Obviously, this is Oakmont.  Did the Church Pews give it away?  Oh well,  I'm going to post this week's Aerial of the Week in a few hours, and I guarantee it'll be substantially harder.  I'm only going to post the photo, and I won't give out another clue until Tuesday, at which time I'll tell you who the architect is!  Good luck....see ya soon.
