Which Courses are these? (Mackenzie)
« on: February 01, 2006, 04:36:29 AM »
Two relatively unchanged hidden gems from the good Doctor's work in the 1920's.  The first has a twist to it.  The second is NOT a paean to Queen's most famous song.

You're a bit of a devil aren't you!  I can't find any MacKenzie courses so short - even 9-holers such as Roundhay or Marsden.  As for working it out from your cryptic clues I've been through Tom Doak's lists with a crossword puzzler's hat on and nothing has yet come to mind.  Further thought required, you brute!

Tom Doak has visited neither course, as far as I know.  Want any more clues (cryptic or otherwise), Mark?

I could use another clue.  Two really.

I take the second clue to mean the 9 holer is not in the UK.  Is this correct?

Both courses are in the UK.  The first one has a different routing most of the year......

Third time lucky?

Could the first be off the ladies tees for the old course reversed? The work being his map?

Ok, I give up, I'm hopless at these and would just like to know.

OK, Tony

The 2nd one is Dalmunzie, identified properly by Michael Hayes in an IM--Well Done, Michael! He, Slag Bandoon and myself are the only GCAers that I know to have played the course.  It is in the middle of nowhere (Perthshire), adjacent to one of Scotland's ski slopes (Glenshee) and associated with a great hotel now owned and run by Australians!

The 1st one is the winter routing (I have the separate card) of a course which has been mentioned many times on this site.

Tony

If you can give me the advice on holidays in Sicily that I asked for several weeks ago, I might give you a more substantive hint!

Rich

Have just re sent it.  I originally sent it on 11 01 through the 'email this person a message'.  I've heard of problems on here before.

Oh damn I've just realised that was some new kind of cryptic clue? Was it ... oh s+++ I hate these! ;)
Let's make GCA grate again!

Thanks for the re-send, Tony.  It's not impossible that I missed it in the first place......

As for clues for the 1st course, the 1st hole has the same tee and fairway as the summer routing, but uses a temporary green, 110-120 yards short, of the Mackenzie/FatBaldyDrummer masterpiece used in the more clement months..

Well I'm glad I wasn't here to tear my hair out about this!  I know neither course - clearly an error of omission.  Wife and I plan a few little golfing excursions onto wee courses in the coming years so we'll add them to the list.  Thank you.
