Mike Cirba:

Are you confusing Merion with Merion Cricket ;D.

Other than the showers, Merion is way down on the list of locker rooms and what they should be.

Have you ever tried to stay in there for more than five minutes after a shower in July with the humidity in the 90% range.  It is a hell hole.  ;)

Maybe Barry wants it that way to keep everybody moving.

Certainly nowhere near places like Seminole and others.

The heat must have created a mirage when you were last there.  ::)

Cheers,
Dave

Those lockerrooms may be nice but Stonewall (West Chester, PA) has a mounted cow's head with driver in its mouth (club logo) in the men's lockerroom.
I don't know what the women's lockerroom has.

Seminole hands down. Ocean Forest is openly patterned after it.

HW;

There's the same mounted cow's head at Stonewall down in the ladies lockeroom except instead of the club being in the cow's mouth, in the ladiesroom it's wrapped around the cow's neck.

Dave Miller;

Heat?  Humidity?  Oppressive conditions in the Merion lockerroom?

Well, one can always stay in the showers which are heavenly, or return to the course, which is a nice option. ;)

I just really enjoy the fact that it feels like 1913 in there.  Or, has it recently been modernized to 1930??  ;)

Mike Cirba:

You surely had to have a mirage.  ;D

Barry, the long time locker room attendant, tells everyone they have a 35 minute limit in the showers.  ::)

Seems like 1913 in there (or even 1930) - you bet.  It's like being on the top floor of a barn with no relief in sight and who knows what the cows and sheep are doing. ::)

God love you Mike.  You're insights are absolutely amazing. ;) And if God doesn't love you.  Rest assured we do. ;D

Cheers,
Dave

I cannot believe that i did not go into Seminole's when there. However, Champions is great. I do not think it belongs in this class but the addon to the old locker room at Western Gailes was great. Olympic is none to shabby either.

Dave;

Actually, it was Tommy Naccarato who had a "mirage", an out of body, near-death experience in that very locker room after nearly passing out from heat prostration on the course and having to quit after 13 holes.

To this day, Tommy will tell you that he was visited by all sorts of ghosts of the past in that locker, and if it isn't the most comfortable and cool locker room, it's probably the most haunted, timeless, and other-worldly.  I had no reason to doubt his "visions" and I have to say that discretion prevents me from repeating what those ghosts told him.

Let's just say that they are strict traditionalists.  ;D

Classic:
Oakmont for sheer size and history (not bad shower heads)
Although having recently played Baltusrol it may be bigger yet.  I almost got lost in Baltusrol.

Mid-aged Classic:  The Golf Club (Just a great feel)

Modern:  Old Memorial - Tampa

Honorable mention:
Champions in Houston.  for the large bar in the mens locker room and the brass plate showing where Jimmy Demeret used to stand most every day (completely naked most of the time from what I understand) and enjoy many drinks and comradery.

Palmetto in Aiken, SC for simplicity, perfect shabbiness, aura, and a neat feel.  Nothing fancy but just fits the feel of the whole place.

Mike:

Don't worry about what the ghosts told the "Emperor". ;)

Eddie Baker (Tommy doesn't have much on The Bake) walked all 18 on a day when the thermometer, on the shack at the range, just off the tee of the Quarry hole was reading 106 and the humidity was pushing over 90%.

Talk about ghosts. :o They told Ed everything they told Tommy and then some.

When he got to the locker room I swear he was talking in tongues to Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead.  There were no vowels in that conversation. ;)

Barry came along and said "35 minute limit in the shower".;D

We couldn't get out of that locker room fast enough.

However we were meeting TEPaul, Chip Oat and Golf's Most Beloved for cocktails and dinner. ;)

That's another story in and of itself.

Best,
Dave

Dave;

Why do those darn ghosts only talk to the "big guys"??

And, why do they only come out in the most extremely oppressive weather??

Ahhh...mysteries for the ages.  ;)

I have asked Tommy to be my spiritual advisor since that day.  Perhaps you should ask the same of Ed!  :)

Mike:

Ed has been my spiritual advisor, fuhrer, bishop and parish priest for more years than I can remember. ;)

Just ask Tom Paul and Wayne Morrison.  As Ed went into his normal every day, being Ed routine at Charles River, Tom and Wayne wanted to know how you can concentrate playing golf with all that. ;D

My answer was simple - I just don't hear it anymore ;)

Best,
Dave

Seminole's has Loch Lomonds' by a bit but I do believe the locker room and men's grill at Desert Mountain has them both beat.

Essex County Club north of Boston has a pretty nice locker room, and a pretty nice course to go with it

Brookline's is great

Winged Foot has some great old pictures from past majors, which are fun to look at as well
