Best Locker Room in Golf?
« on: October 16, 2002, 06:25:43 AM »
While we're on the subject of "bests" - anyone care to throw in their tuppence-worth on the best locker rooms on the game? Maybe a separate thread could explore 19th Holes. As for locker rooms, Wade Hampton is the best I've seen - cozy, warm (esp. since it has a fireplace - yep, in the locker room), and unpretentious.

Never been, never seen, but heard wonderful things:

Seminole

Does anyone have a picture of this they can post?

If anyone actually has a picture of the inside of Seminole's lockerroom (which I would seriously doubt) I would not advise posting it on Golfclubatlas!

I was up in St Andrews a couple of months ago and spent quite a bit of time in the new Links Clubhouse which is absolutely.  Considering that 10-15 years ago you had to change in the car park it is an enormous improvement and makes you feel really wanted by the town.  The big pluses are excellent showers, lockers with superb pine doors, thick carpeting, excellent food upstairs and great beer.

Has to be one of the best "municipal" clubhouses in existence and has great views over the Old Course.

Seminole is the best.  If you want to see a picture of it, get a copy of GOLF THE GREATEST GAME.

Seminole may be the best, I have never seen it...

But, it's gotta be pretty special to beat the locker room at Loch Lomond...

Old Memorial in Tampa does not suck! Since the majority of the clubhouse is the Mens locker room I guess it should be given consideration as one of the best clubhouses as well! ;)

If we are talking shower pressure nothing tops Merion.

Castle Pines GC is pretty incredible. It's bigger than all the houses I've ever lived in combined, well appointed and the service is impeccable.

Re showers TE Paul where's that old thread of many months ago about "best shower heads" ?  As I recall, Merion "blew the others away"!!  8)

Seminole is outstanding

Brookline is good

Jupiter Hills is good

Whitemarsh outside Philly is pretty good

Aronimink is pretty good - TV's, pool table, fireplace, and grill room all within the confines of the men's locker room.  Great showers with even better pressure than Merion.  Heads built right into the ceiling comes out like you are standing under a fireplug.

Merion has great showers but the rest of the locker room is pretty poor.

Best,
Dave

Not being familiar with the previously mentioned...

Do they have their bar in their locker rooms, or the locker rooms in the bar?

Champions (Houston) has both.  I don't know which came first?   ;D
And lots of card tables.
And very good snacks.

Castle Pines has the best service in any locker room.  Tommy, who runs it, is a locker room consultant in the winter--and he is incredible.

Golf Greatest Game is a USGA Publication written by a number of writers (different writer for each chapter).  Curt Sampson wrote the chapter on clubhouses.  If someone has it, pull it out and read his last two paragraphs ;D ;D ;D.

Two best I've been to (havent seen Seminole, The Golf Club or Double Eagle), but Butler National and Hawks Ridge in Georgia are great.  Hawks is pretty new, but it is in the old clubhouse style (wood everywhere) and lockers are old style.  Nothing much has to be said about Butler National......great atmosphere.

The best locker rooms I've seen are Garden City and Merion.

Both just REEK of atmosphere and have the comfort of genteel antiquity.

Garden City Golf Club!  ;D

Where else can you play golf with no clothes on but need to keep a sports coat with you most of the time...

Not having been to either of Rich's nominees but loving his categorization of such, let me nominate:

Cecil B. DeMille:  Cordevalle, south of San Jose, CA.  Hopefully someone else can attest to this.  Locker room flows into bar which has huge overstuffed chairs, huge TV's everywhere, great view, huge fireplace... Texas isn't the only place they do things big.  This place is incredible.

Dickens:  Cypress Point.  Locker room is tiny and ancient and just OOZES tradition.
