East coast - end of March
« on: January 23, 2006, 04:02:06 AM »
So...
I will spend a couple of days in the NYC at the end of March.

There might be an opening in my schedule for a day or two while I am there. Should I consider to bring my clubs?

I have never visited the east coast at this part of the year and have no idea what to expect when it comes to climate and general condition of courses, so please advice.

If you really want to play in decent conditions, I would try South and West of NYC in New Jersey where courses are sandy and in the Pine Barrens. Basically Pine Valley was set up for this shoulder season, but realizing that may not be an option, I would try Pine Barrens (closest to NYC), Pine Hill, Blue Heron Pines, Twisted Dune and Atlantic City (which has alot of wind chill exposure). Forsgate too which is private, but may accept a call at that time of year.

On Long Island, you will lose a week or two of growing season, but Tall Grass and Long Island National should be open.

Eric,

Mike has most of this well-nailed. Of course, I'd add Bethpage and maybe Hominy Hill to the list. If you choose to try Forsgate and need any help, feel free to let me know. I'm sure I can help arrange that.

As of yesterday the Yellow and Blue courses are open.  By March they may open the Green and possibly the Red.  I don't think the Black gets going until April.

Steve, how is Forsgate as an example of Banks?  Is it fairly true to his work, or has it gone through a host of changes?

Thanks guys!

Bethpage sounds really interesting since I will be staying close to Penn Station. I'll guess that eliminates the need to rent a car since it should be quite easy to reach by train, right?

I'll guess it should be quite easy to get on the black as a single in the end of March?

Sorry Dave (and thanks for the information).

Didn't see your remark about Bethpage Black being closed til April until after I posted my question about getting on as a single.
