GCAers in Tennessee
« on: February 01, 2006, 05:24:40 PM »
Hey guys  I am trying to find out if there are any GCAers in the West TN area.  I know there are a few guys in Knoxville, Chatanooga and Nashville.

I am in Memphis and I have not heard of anyone in this area.  If so lets play golf!  Maybe try and have a little golf outing or something

thanks,
Tucker

One of my all time favorites ...........Memphis Country Club....have you ever played it? The Best in Memphis, along with Rendezvous dry Ribs..........

Martin
I live in east TN.....I get down to Memphis about 3 times a year.  I have two good friends that are members at TPC Southwind

Yes it is a great course.  I have not played it in a few years.  I am not a big fan of the TPC.  Actually I am not a big fan of most golf courses in Memphis.  There are just a few.  If you down this way let me know.

Tucker, I am moving to Oxford MS in a few months from Athens GA.  Not too many options in area from what I can gather but I will be teeing it somewhere.

Matt,

I havent played any tournaments lately,  I am trying to get my game back to a point where I can.  You might know my younger brother, Reed Davis.  He plays for Samford and plays a lot of amatuer tourneys in Tennessee and the southeast.

RE,

I am guessing you are a teacher?..Not too many options in Oxford.
The Tunica courses are ok and there is a Bob Cupp course near Oxford called Mallard Pointe.  I have not played it but you can join for very cheap.  Let me know when you will be coming to Oxford and maybe we can get a game going.

Cottonwood at the Grande is a great course.  Kirkwood is also good in Miss.  Also, Chichasaw has a great layout and is a part of the Bear Trace group..........it is in Henderson, TN....a small drive from Oxford,

Tucker,

We have already corresponded offline, but I wanted to be on record as a memeber of the Tennessee contingent. I'm in Knoxville.

You mentioned in one of your emails that you might be visiting this end of the state later in the year. It seems that GCA has several followers in East Tennessee. Maybe we could organize a game then.

Martin,

Noticed your separate post on your PB/MPCC trip. My brother and I made the same trip last year. Your photos made me want to do it again.

We need to figure out a game sometime in the Spring with all the TN guys.  I am guessing it is probably a little cold in Kingsport right now.

I'm familiar with Ridgefields but have never played there. My brother (Daniel) lives in Bristol and is a member at Bristol Country Club.

I belong to Holston Hills CC here in Knoxville (another Donald Ross) and would be glad to host a game as well.

Now I am excited. I play HH back 6-7 years ago with my Bro in law . BY FAR the best Ross in TN ( that I have seen)

Did the renovations on the greens effect her much?

Jerry,
unfortunately Roger Smith has moved form the area.  His assistant Brent Maples is now in charge, which I believe his father is the greens superintendent at Holston Hills........H.H. is one of my all time favorite courses.  A few yeasrs back Holston and Ridgefields had Ryder Cup matches against each other.  This was before I was a member.........

It would be nice to get that going again.

Jerry,

I have only been a member for  about three years, so all my experience is post green rennovation.

We are now in the midst of a bunker project which should greatly improve the playablity of the bunkers.

Nice to see the Whole Hee Haw Gang come out of the closet.

Tucker, thanks for the IM.  I owe you a reply.

Jerry, welcome to the site.  I assume Joey Hickman is still the head professional at Old Hickory.  I went to Ripley High School with Joey Hickman's older brother and went toe to toe with their father for the club championship after he retired from major league baseball with the Cubbies.  Give my regards to Joey as I regret not looking him up in all my years in Nashville.  I have gained 75 lbs and 15 strokes since I last saw him - it's been a while.

To all, please let me know when you're in the area.  You are welcome to join me at Vanderbilt Legends Club.  Young Tim Bert is new in town, working way too hard, and perhaps could join us as well.

Kindest regards,

Mike Hendren

Joey is one of those few Great pros. Haveing been around many, I know.  I will say hi to him for you.
A trip to the Legens is always fun. Seen any new effect from the new mgt.
Glad to see Joe Kennedy stayed on. Hope he is more involved there this year. He does an outstanding job.
Do not know Tim Bert. Is he a pro out at VLC?

Let pick a place to play soon.

I say we try and get a game together in Nashville sometime.  That is a central location and some of us could get there for a Saturday match.

I am up for whatever.  I just want to play some golf courses across the state and get to know a few of you guys.  I am getting a little tired of the Memphis golf scene.

Tucker,
My Grandfather was from Memphis, as was my GGF and GGM and my GGGF and GGGM!

He was also served as a Confederate river boat pilot. My maternal family name is Lenow, who married into the McKnett's. Supposedly there is a town or used to be a town near Memphis actually named, Lenow. My Grandfather moved to California in 1920, just in time for Max Behr, George Thomas', Billy Bell, John Duncan Dunn, Norman MacBeth and Willie Watson's reign in the golf architecture world of Los Angeles!
