GolfWorld's "Lipouts"
« on: September 27, 2005, 04:05:56 PM »
From the latest issue (Sept. 23) of GolfWorld Magazine in their "Lipouts" section:

"I think we can have an influence on who builds our courses.  Tom Doak is talking to the tour about building a course in Milwaukee, and I'd like to see guys like David McLay Kidd [designer of Bandon Dunes] and [Bill] Coore and [Ben] Crenshaw design courses we play.  The days of [Tom] Fazio and [Pete] Dye are ending."

Joe Ogilvie, newly elected member of the PGA Tour policy board on one of the directiosn he hopes the tour will take during his three-year term.

Comments?  Opinions?

Mike,

I was going to make a post the other day about news that Pete Dye has designed the soon-to-be TPC at San Antonio to host the Texas Open in the very near future.

I have tremendous repsect for Mr. Dye, but another Dye TPC course?! Why, when there are several really good architects out there who would love such an opportunity?!

In fact, Coore and Crenshaw were considering taking the job to design/build the second course at the same project. Greg Norman's doing it now.

Joe Ogilvie's comments are very, very promising for professional golf.

Man, I'd love to see what Coore and Crenshaw would do knowing that the course they're designing and building will definitely host a pro event. I guess we might with Colorado Golf Club...

Mike, these comments were discussed quite a bit earlier this month when they first appeared in print.  I think the thread was around the first week of Sept - about the time of the Canadian Open maybe.

I missed that thread, too, but I'll say this: what's considered cutting edge in fashion gradually works its way to the masses, if there's any merit to it. We all know there's merit in what Coore & Crenshaw, Doak and Kidd have been doing, and the pros know it, too -- why wouldn't their style of architecture ultimately become the standard?

I think the future for new courses is with the Doaks and Coores of the world. However no one in my opinion has steped up to replace Fazio in his market. Normans stuff is not good enough. There is man from the UK who has won a few majors and cannot dress in matching cloths but is giving it a try to make his mark in architecture. Davis Love is giving it an honest go as well. Yet the style of both of these mens work has yet to mature nor has a market come to be associated with either.
