Perhaps valid under their own criteria. Whatever.

I guess the author had a bad experience at Pacific Dunes as Bandon makes it to #4 and PD is excluded. There is no way he could fly 9 million miles and just play Bandon Dunes.

Interesting selection for the overall experience at Sawgrass coming in at #7.  I really like the course, but as a resort, play tends to be quite slow, and my first time playing there, we arrived at the shop at noon, during a very heavy lightning storm.  When I asked about our 1:15 starting time, I was told they're running right on time.  I said how can there be golfers teeing off in this lightning, I was told, "I guess it's not lightning on the first tee".  I was further told if we don't tee off then, the next available time was at 4:35pm.  Ahh, the experience.......

"thank you very little"

How did they justify printing that list in the article that went along with it?  Is it just the editors' opinion or did they do a poll?

It looks suspiciously like a way to keep some advertisers happy.  Le Touessrok, for example, can now advertise themselves as "Golf World top 10 in the world" for the rest of time.

It's possible that all the courses at Bandon Dunes, put together, are what put it at #3 ... can't tell for sure just from the listing, but they have "Walt Disney World" as one listing, too.  And where the heck is Uummanaq?  Or The Gezira Club?

The Gezira Club is 9 holer built by the British over a 100 years ago in Cairo , and you can see the Pyramids from the course ! .

Uummanaq is in Greenland and hosts the world ice golf championships , "biggest hazard Polar Bears" .

Have you any experience of Le Touessrok ? .

Brian

PS. Where is our 'Dunhill' report ? .

Tom,

Lighten up man.  :D For crying out loud they have Prison View Golf Course @ #98 , which I doubt has much of a advertising budget:

Prison View Golf Course is located on the grounds of Louisiana State Penitentiary, Angola, LA, and is operated by the Louisiana State Penitentiary Employee Recreation Committee.

Prison View offers players a challenging round of golf, practice facility and Clubhouse.

Number 1 tee box is elevated approx. 75 yards in the Tunica Hills offering a spectacular view of Louisiana’s only maximum security prison

These chaps have spent little time at either Crystal Downs or Fishers Island.

There aren't eighteen decent holes at Disney World out of the 108 they offer. Must of been one heck of a time at Magic Mountain!

Mike S:

A friend of mine has already noted with glee that Prison View was two places ahead of Kidnappers.  At least it finished behind Barnbougle! ;)

I'm not taking this too seriously; I just don't understand their motives.  A weird list like this one certainly undermines the credibility of their supposedly serious lists of the best courses in Britain and Europe and so on, because you know a course is going to tout their highest placing no matter what list they're on ... i.e. is Kingsbarns #5 in Britain, #5 in Europe, or just #5 on this dumb thing?

I'll have a lot more fun driving up Magnolia lane than the road to Kingbarns, as for experience only

The K Club?  The K Club???

I attended the European Open a few years ago at the K Club, and was pretty underwhelmed.   To put it ahead of other great Irish courses is a statement about style over substance.

And I've been to Bandon and Pine Valley, and, belive me, as much as I love Bandon, I'd choose the PV experience every time if I could only play one course for the rest of my life.

Although Mark Rowlinson has been complaining on here about the pitiful standard of the UK golf mags for at least the last 18 months they really have gone downhill this year. IF you think this list is crazy you should see some of the others.  One of them published a list of the top ten new courses in UK - no Grove or Kingsbarns- but highlighted The Vale in Wales a course that defines Doak Scale 0.

It all seems to have started when a new monthly came out called 'Golf Punk'.  This featured a lot of hip attitude and the bunker babes!   Since then the others have panicked and it’s list after list after list to supplement the endless second string pro’s giving tips – which are often contradictory within the same issue!

Following a recent redesign, Today’s Golfer (the biggest seller) now looks just like the other two big sellers.  I can now no longer tell Golf apart from Golf World.  One is published in London and the other in Peterborough and in the last episode of the London one I saw they  had dropped their female editor and gone over to - your guessed it lists of this and that.  All of them are entirely devoid of interest to GCA types - save your money.

Here's a list of things the editors should note.

Most unpleasantly smarmy UK Journalist
1 Paul Mahoney

Most wasted talented UK Journalist
2 Jock Wallace.

In London I can occasionally pick up copies of the US magazines but am I wrong to think Golf has deteriorated in the last couple of years?
Let's make GCA grate again!
