Back in the States...

Hi everyone,

I'm home safe in San Diego...only 26 1/2 hours door-to-door from Melbourne. We had an unscheduled landing in Honolulu for more fuel...and we couldn't get out of the plane...    >:(

I'm planning on writing an "In My Opinion" piece about my experiences in Oz. I'd love to hear ideas or any specific questions for what people might like to hear about.

This is my final list of courses I played. I missed a few but overall I did alright:

Albert Park
Commonwealth (5)
The National Old (2), Moonah, and Ocean
Spring Valley
Thirteenth Beach
Gisbourne
Sanctuary Lakes
Peninsula North
Portsea
Royal Melbourne West
Newcastle
New South Wales
Goonawarra (3)
The Dunes
Southern
Kingston Heath (3)

I also walked Victoria, set foot at Yarra Yarra, Royal Sydney, Moonah Links, and Royal Melbourne East without being able to play, and saw what will become St. Andrews Beach.

Hi Matt.

Looks like you played a boat-load of great courses.

Can you give a Dave Letterman style Top Ten, with an objective sentence or two about why each course is where it stands in your ranking?

Also - Biggest surprise and biggest disappointment ??

Have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.  I'd love to hear about the differences between playing in the US and in Melbourne and what effect that has on the way you play the game.

Looking forward to the full "wrap" on Aussie golf on GCA shortly.

Aren't you happy as a clam to be back in the good old all powerful US of A? Personally, I think you made it back in just the nick of time as it looks like we might be about to fight simultaneous wars with everyone other than us! I heard that Rumsfeld thinks Australia might have sabotaged that O'Connor America Cup yacht that mysteriously sank and he's claiming he's gonna make Oz sorry with one of our special blitzcrieg military attacks!

Matt, do you think you will be sharing any more photos from your trip? I would love to see more of Portsea, Peninsula and Yarra Yarra.

Photos, good call. Unfortunately I don't really have those courses except one of Portsea. I have heaps from NSWGC, Commonwealth, Thirteenth Beach and Kingston Heath, several from Royal Melbourne West, and small numbers from Southern, Gisborne, The Dunes, The National - Old, Newcastle, and Portsea. Oh, and one of Brian Walshe and I in front of #18 on The National - Ocean. An ironic place for a picture, at best!

Almost all the courses have fantastic websites, many with 18-hole photo tours, so that's worth a look too.

Welcome home.

Has this trip changed your views on modern American golf architecture in any way?

How do you now view Meadows at Del Mar; The Norman course at PGA West; etc. when comparing what is GREAT in Australia?
