Andy, I'm glad to learn that my memory has not completely failed me! Isn't Columbia a fun course to play? What a varied group of holes, no two alike. And always in excellent condition but not overwatered. They must have a sharp super, at least when I played there over ten years ago.
Bill, it truly is a fun course. It does not beat you up--it sure gives you lots of chances to lose strokes here and there though.
I drive past the course all the time, but was surprised by how varied and dramatic the land was. A lot of up and down, big movements in the fairways, rolls, uneven lies etc.
The course was actually a tad soft last week, but that was from recent rains, not maintenance practices. The caddie let me know serveral times that places I had hit would have been incredibly hard two putts ordinarily.
I've haven't seen Columbia in twenty years, but looking back at it I'd have to say playing that course did as much as any to spark my interest in the history of golf architecture as any other course.
Tom, I can certainly see why. How much of what is there today would you estimate is original?
