At a dinner last night at the Dogwood Invitational (a prestigious regional amateur tournatment in Atlanta), Walt Driver said:
1. Players hit it 30 to 40 yards longer at PII in '05 than in '99. (That's slightly longer than the official, published stats indicated.)
2. Given the distances people hit it today, courses require about 25% more acreage to keep up.
NB: This is not some GCA nut case having fun with numbers. This is the president-elect of the USGA talking.
Driver did not talk about what this meant for the future of the game, but it sounds like we have stipulated to a pretty remarkable set of facts.
Call me Pollyanna, call me naive, but I think this is encouraging.
