Mike,

I am not embarrassed to say that I didn't see or get 90% of what Pinehurst #2 had to offer the first time I played it...same goes for every other course I ever played even though that might be embarrassing to admit.   It takes at least one round just to wash out the preconceived notions out of my head.

I love to play a good course twice or more. The same day or back to back days is all the better. The course reveals many new things to you each time you play it. I do not really feel good about having a strong opinion on a course till I have played it 4 times.

John,
Does this mean you will be playing Yale or The Creek two or more days in a row?

There are no Morton's near any of those courses. At least that I know of.

Yes Tommy it would be against my nature to play Yale two days in a row at a savings of over $400 when compared to going to the The Creek outing....but as you know for guys like me...Charity is the spice of life.

John,

Playing a course multiple times in multiple conditions is obviously ideal, but I'm betting you got at least 80% of it your first go round.

I love seeing different courses...good, bad, and indifferent, and have learned something at the best and worst places I've been.

I guess I'd rather err on the side of getting 80% of two places than 85% of one.  If I had unlimited free time I'd wish for more, but I would tell you that I also do lots of homework, study, research and soliciting of others thought and opinions on each course I play.

Mike,

An architect and an owner and even some of the members put their heart and soul into a course and you are happy with an 80% understanding before you move on to your next conquest....that is very sad.   What is the 20% that you miss....Is it the beauty of the site,  is it the conditioning,  is it the ambience or tradition factors,  the walk in the park feel,  the memorability of the par 3's, 4's and 5's....no, no, no no, no, no, no, no....What do you miss...I don't get it.

My 2 cents:
I've played a fair share of "trophy" courses in Ireland, of those -- RCD and Lahinch, twice. I have a better appreciation for those 2 - although it may say more about my rate of absorption!

I also play Arcadia Bluffs numerous times each summer (at the low twilight rate), and have seen the changes over the past 6 years. I think i truly understand what the designers wanted to do, how well it works, and when changes are made, what gets better.

Last point - if I'm at a place I'm not likely to return to, i'm going to "collect" as fast as I can. Play both Bandons instead of one twice? Yes. Play 10 ireland courses in 8 days? No brainer.

Go figure!

However, with so much to see, and so little time to travel, I'd be inclined to play two different courses as a means of expanding the scope of golf courses and architectural features seen.

TK

Slow down and smell the roses my young friend...look at architectural features in books if that is what you want but when out in the field why not really just sit back and soak it all in....don't fall into the trap that you possess an eye that can see it all on one trip because that only exists only in an artifical architectural model created by people who are forced to play a course only once because of their jobs.....I don't blame them because they have family's to feed and their publishers don't pay them to lolly gag around.

John,

While I agree with you completely in theory, unless one has the financial means to take extended trips or repeated visits to the same areas, it is likely that you'll have to accept never seeing certain courses. I certainly realize that it is impossible to accurately "soak in" the architecture of a golf course in one round, but it is still better than never seeing the course in person.

No, no, no, no, no, John...

You were the one who said you didn't get 90% of a course on a first visit, so knowing you're a smart guy, I whittled YOU down to 80%, for discussion purposes.

I already said earlier that I get over 90%

I'm just trying to help you out here with your diminishing returns on each play.  ;)

When I finally get around to crossing the ocean to see the Scottish Highlands, I'll apply for a Barney Grant to supplement my itenerary for two extra days and four extra greens fees at Royal Dornoch. I'll even try to arrange it when there are some roses in bloom.

Tyler,

What I am saying is that for instance if you are going to Michigan to play the Kingsley Club stay in the cottages and play there for your whole trip with one small side bar over to Crystal Downs....spend time on the porch instead of the road.  It is not until you are older that you find out that burying your face in the warm bossom of a woman who truly loves you is far sweeter than rubbing the cold feet of a hundered stangers.  Variety is not the spice of life ..it is an excuse made by people who can not make a commitment...you will rarely find an interesting quote come from the lips of a happy man.   Of course writers and critics think it is sexy to be miserable.

John,

By the way, here's a link to some information on my latest "conquest".

This place is so exclusive that they don't even have their own website.

Mike,

What was the point of playing there....and would you recommend that Tyler he of new job and young fresh girl who he seems to be very much in love with spend his day searching out that course or others like it.   Why not just stay close at home and learn something new about an old friend.  note:  I couldn't pull up your link so have no idea where you played.

John,

I don't know what to recommend to Tyler because I don't know what drives him, but I can tell you that I really love to see and play different courses of all types.

Since you can't pull up the link, I can tell you that the course in question is a par 56, 18 hole public executive course called Village Greens where green fees run at $12 on weekends about 25 minutes from my new home.  The conditions are pretty fair and you line up at the first tee and go from there.  Great fun, and some interesting architecture by the former owner, Donald Robitzer.

Rich,

In a bizarre twist inspired by the "Village" in NYC, shirts and shoes are required, but pants are not.

John,

Nice list...and almost all of them are public.

I've played each and every one except;

Berkshire CC - Really want to...old Willie Park
Brookside (Pottstown) - I pass on my way to work.
Lancaster CC - probably the only "trophy" course in the group.
Olde Hickory -
Springside Par 3 - Going to get there soon...love par three courses.

Arrowhead GC is very close to my house...run a 25 mile listing from there and it should be pretty cool.

John,

I think you may have hit on something here...

I went to look at courses within 25 miles of my house and there are 77.

I then searched on my last residence and there are 147 courses within 25 miles.

That is probably as good a reason as any that I like to see and play different courses, although I've driven 1-6 hours each way in a day to play many other courses that interested me, as well.
