Green Hills or The Meadow?
« on: April 25, 2005, 01:58:36 PM »
I finally figured out how to use the advanced search function and found the thread about where to play in Northern California.  I found that thread very helpful in planning my trip to California this summer.  One question/problem I have is that I want to play Green Hills or Meadow but I only have time to play one, so I wanted to seek out the advice of the Northern California experts on here.
Greens Hills renovated a few holes in 97/98 according to their website and I understand Meadow in currently being restored by Mike DeVries.  So which one would you play if you could only play one?

My vote would be the Meadow Club. No doubt about that. I have not played Green Hills in 10 years or so, but I recall it being very tight and very close to its surrounding neighbors. On a few tees/greens, you could see what people in the houses next door  were eating for breakfast. The setting of the Meadow Club could not be more idyllic.

I am lucky enough to have played the Meadow Club twice - a year apart and with more of the restoration completed on the second visit.  It was most impressive work.  The setting is very much a part of the experience with not a single house visible from the course.  There are one or two average holes (particularly those beside the range) but the rest is gorgeous.  I have no experience of Green Hills.

Cory, I concur with the above.   The Meadow Club is a no brainer in this situation.  Mike DeVries apparently has done an outstanding renovation of a course with a great setting and MacKenzie original design.  Green Hills is tightly routed on a steeply sloping piece of land.  By contrast, Meadow has a remote feeling in an area with little surrounding real estate and superb views of Mt. Tamalpias.  Sort of like a cross between the Valley Club and Banff!

I will only add one other note of caution, as I would opt for the Meadow Club as well.....

Don't be lulled into thinking that the Meadow Club is an easy hop, skip and jump from whereever else you might be in Northern California.  If you schedule this one, try not to cut any of your timing too close, and make it the only course of the day, if necessary, as it is pretty darn remote (for Marin County) and not too easy to navigate to, and that's not even allowing for the notorious traffic...

That having been said, of those two, I would definitely make the effort to get to the Meadow Club, as it is first-rate...

I found the greens/green complexes at Green Hills to be very challenging, although it's been a few years now so I can't speak for more recent findings.  If it's an either/or and the Meadow club doesn't pan out, you shouldn't pass on Green Hills because of it, but the Mackenzie nuances are better in evidence now at Meadow...

I have never played The Meadow Club and I concur that although the green complexes at Green Hills are interesting, the course is shoe horned into its location.

Edited - I was thinking of Meadowood ... ;)

Gentlemen-

In all but the VERY worst case scenario, the Meadow Club is no more than a 45-minute drive from the Golden Gate Bridge. Except for afternoon rush hour(s) traffic (3-7pm), it really should not take much more than 30 minutes to get there from the GG Bridge. It is certainly worth the trip!
