I played 36 holes at Silloth-on-Solway with Larry Kellto on Friday. I sort of knew it, having played it a few times in the past, and I had even written about it. We had a great day. When I returned, I read Ran's write-up in 'Courses by Country'. He played it only once. His write-up captures the essence of the course and place perfectly. The day before his Silloth visit I walked round Alwoodley with him as he played it, also for the first time. He made no notes, had time for wide-ranging conversation and even a bit of serious competition with Rick Holland. Once again, his essay is so directly to the point that more is unnecessary. Impressive!
