What to play around Hidden Creek?
« on: April 22, 2005, 08:13:02 AM »
I need a course to play for Saturday of the Hidden Creek weekend. I have played Twisted Dunes and am playing Galloway on Sunday.

Best suggestions please.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

How good are your contacts? Try Atlantic City CC.I can't help you with this one.

Publics in the area: Sand Barrens to the south or Sea Oaks or Pine Barrens to the north. Another possiblity that I have not played yet but is getting good reviews is The Vineyard at Renault Winery.

Have you played Blue Heron Pines East by Smyers?

Pine Hill is about a 45 minute drive from the shore.

I'd be happy to play a round with you at Pine Hill.
It is probably at least an hour from Hidden Creek.
If you have any interest just let me know.

As a golf course, I'd recommend Blue Heron Pines East before it becomes RIP, although I'd take Ted K. up on his kind offer first.

Mike,

Why would a serious student of architecture like Cary want to play two Fazio's on the same trip...wouldn't Hollywood be an interesting choice if you can't do a top 10.  I recall some fun discussions on its heritage...what a treat.   Shirley with it on the Golfweek list it is only a phone call away....being mid-level and all that is.

I have played Pine Valley, Pine Hill, Baltusrol, Merion and Twisted Dunes.

I would like to play something I haven't played before. Of the top courses listed by Kavanaugh, are any within an hour or so of Hidden Creek?

Cary,
If you want to do something fun, try the ferry across the Delaware Bay from Cape May, NJ to Lewes, Del.  There are a bunch of courses in Southern Delaware, plus the shopping is all sales-tax free.

I don't know Jersey all that well, but I think the bulk of the upper part of that list is more northern, more than an hour away. I think some of the ones in the 15-20 range are more southern, such as #s 17-20. I think Shore Gate has gotten horrible reviews from our Jersey and Pennsy posters, there should be threads on Running Deer in the archives. The Architects Club shouldn't be much more than an hour from HC, if that.

Most of the Philly Flynn masterpieces are probably in the vicinity of an hour away.

Where's Matt Ward when you need him?

Matt Ward is at Plainfield crying in his scrambled eggs because they told him Golf Digest and Golfweek raters are all the same.   Cary, if you want to play there I would be happy to make the call...really...with all that is going on and given everywhere else you have played Plainfield has to be a lock.

As delicious as the Hidden Creek outing is I will be tied up at the Seth Raynor Society meeting that weekend....who gets to tie me up will be determined by silent auction earlier in the evening.

Quassi,

If you would like to join in the annual mocking of Stone Harbor GC between Tom Paul and me here at GCA, I would suggest Stone Harbor GC. There is a reason that it received a Doak 0. Trust me, it is not a Doak 0, it may be on the negative side.  :) Seriously. a day at SHGC with a whimsical attitude and then dinner that night in nearby Cape May with your wife and/or partners is the way to go. By the way, the above hole has been replaced.

For golf and easy logitics, I would agree with Mike Cirba's recommendation of Blue Heron Pines - Smyers course. Plainfield is 2 hours up the Garden State Parkway.

This is listed as  one of the 12 toughest holes. There is now land between the bunkers and the green, but on a windy day it is still frightening.

As usual, we welcome guys to Rolling Green, but Sat. and Sun. is a two day spring member-member. There is always Tuesday though.

On that list of N.J. courses within an hour, I choose Scotland Run.

Philadelphia is closer than North Jersey, BTW.

We all seem to be overlooking Seaview Bay. Certainly there's some architectural significance here- Ross/Wilson. The Pines at Seaview may have seen better days. The pics in the clubhouse are neat.

THanks Steve,

Was reading through this thread waiting for a mention of Seaview's Bay Course, I'll second that. Also, before Wayne gets on here... Flynn had a hand in the routing of the Bay Course.

Also, take a trip down to Ocean City and play Greate Bay, an old Willie Park design...

Scotland Run and Pine Hill are worth it too.

Mike Sweeney: A guy I know has been club champion at Pine Valley at number of times and lives on Huntingdon Valley and his favorite course is Stone Harbor so there are some in the know who look very favorably upon Stone Harbor -- I have never played it but the only Desmond Muirhead course I've played is a total disaster.

Cary:

If you can swing the tariff -- try ACCC. Well done layout and the work by Doak was needed to bring back this gem.

On the public side I agree with Mike Malone -- head to Williamstown in Gloucester County -- via AC Expressway and play Scotland Run. Well done layout by Stephen Kay in the same league IMHO with its more higher profile Pine Hill.

If you are looking for some interesting (combo of up and down type holes) try Running Deer in Pitsgrove. It's about 40 minutes from the AC area -- a mixed bag of comments from various main participants here on GCA -- I like the course for what amateur designer Ed Carmen created. When you get to the 2nd hole the game is certainly on.

One last thing -- Mike Cirba's call on BHP / East is spot on. The course will no longer exist after the '05 season and is well done by a man who knows how to handle flat sites -- Steve Smyers -- one of the most underrated architects in the USA.

Hope this helps ...  ;)

Jerry,

I used to be a member of Stone Harbor GC, and while location is a big part of it, SHGC has always had its fans ! I am serious when I said it should be played by Quassi on his trip.

Cary / Mike:

The "original" Stone Harbor no longer exists -- serious changes were made because of the fanfare attached to the original Muirhead design. Going there is not the same now with the former "jaws" hole being completely transformed into some sort of Palm Springs par-3 hole.

I will say this -- no one plays Stone Harbor without having a very clear opinion on the course. Maybe Cary should play it. ;D

How much of Park's course is left at GB?  Didn't it undergo a good sized makeover?

JBergan;

I'd estimate that it's still about 65% Park.

An original par three is a driving range, and some holes have been completely rebuilt (by George Fazio and then Ron Garl), but a good deal is still pretty pristine.

If Archie Struthers is around he can answer more specifics.

I was talking about Aberdeen in Boynton Beach, Florida.  The course has been a disaster from day one and the members have spent tons of money just to make it playable.

Greate Bay is worth some study. I  remember one green complex that was awesome. It had two plateaus on the right and left side with a bowl in the middle. I wonder if this is Park's work. If so, I want to see more.

  Stone Harbor sucks.
