12 Toughest Holes in the World

Hawaiian 18th drives more golfers mad than Road Hole

RAYMOND DUNCANApril 22 2005

IT has gained notoriety as one of the hardest par fours in golf, a reputation earned because of the deep and dominant bunker that a Japanese player once nicknamed "The Sands of Nakajima".

The 17th Road Hole on the Old Course at St Andrews, with its narrowing, undulating fairway, has trapped and embarrassed the best.

David Duval, from the US, handed the 2000 Open Championship to fellow countryman Tiger Woods after taking five minutes and four shots to escape its sand. Major champions such as Tom Watson of America and South African Ernie Els have also cursed it and come away with nightmare stories to tell.

However, despite its world-wide infamy, it is not the toughest hole in the game, according to a survey compiled by Today's Golfer magazine.

The dubious honour goes to one thousands of miles from the home of golf.

The world's most challenging hole has been identified in the magazine poll as the 18th at the Oahu Club in Hawaii.
In the shadow of the towering Ko'olau mountain ridge with thick jungle on either side of the fairway, the 476-yard par four winds between ravines and waterfalls and is described as "the pinnacle of golf's ultimate challenge".

It is said to be the finishing hole on a course that is "without doubt the toughest on the face of the planet".

One player, according to the record books, is said to have lost no fewer than 63 balls in one round.

But the 17th at the Old Course can still claim its place as one of the most feared.

Almost certain to feature prominently at this year's Open, it makes it into the survey of the world's hardest 18 holes at number six.

David Pirie, a Glasgow-based teaching professional, said yesterday: "This is quite a surprise considering Scotland's reputation as the world's greatest golf destination.

"But it has to be said that some of the holes featured in the poll are so difficult that even Tiger Woods would struggle to make his par."

Ben Crenshaw, the veteran American golfer, said: "The reason the Road Hole is such a great par four is because it's a par five."

However, three years ago, and much to the anger of the traditionalists who claimed the sand trap was part of folklore, the famous bunker, eight feet wide at its base, was altered to make it less terrifying.

Two feet were taken off its height and the trap was moved farther from the green where thousands of spectators in ringside seats have been provided with sporting entertainment over the years.

St Andrews Links Trust, responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the course, said the changes were mainly intended for the thousands of amateurs who play the course. The organisation said that the work simply restored the bunker to its condition of 30 years ago.

However, there are plans to make it tougher again for the Open in July.

Of the 16 other toughest holes in the magazine's survey, seven are in the United States, including the 8th at Chocolay Downs East in Michigan which, at 1007 yards, is the longest hole in the world. It takes eighth place.

Two are in Ireland: the 11th at Old Ballybunion, County Kerry, which is ranked number nine, and the 12th at Old Head, Kinsale, looking out on to the Atlantic Ocean, which takes eighteenth spot in the league table.

England joins Scotland in having only one hole on the list – the 15th at Seahouses in Northumberland, which is ranked 16.

The other toughest holes in order of difficulty are at courses in Bolivia, New Zealand, Mexico, Hong Kong, Japan, and Spain.

I am going to have to replace #18 at Doral Blue with 17 at Winged Foot East, possibly the hardest hole in the world with no hazards.

The toughest hole in England is a 124 yard par 3? I should make it to Seahouses this summer so look forward to finding out.

I played Seahouses back in 1967/8 or thereabouts.  Unfortunately I can't remember #15, so if you could take a pic and post it, I'd appreciate it.

The one hole which does stick in my mind is a par 3, played from an elevated tee to a green which is surrounded by rock - whether this is the 15th or not, I cannot recall.

I too put Tom's Pirate's Plank hole on my 12 Toughest Holes In The World list. It featured well up on my 12 Holes Most Likely To Cause Accidental Death list too. Number one in fact  :)

Whenever I see a hole in Bolivia finishing high in a survey of golfers, I have my doubts about the statistical reliability of the "survey."

One of those wandering-around-the-newsroom "surveys," perhaps?

That sounds like the one. I can't find a picture anywhere on the web so will definitely take a camera.

La Paz interests me , but I cant get their Spanish website to open . www.lapazgolfclub.com to see who designed it .

One of the highest courses in the world according to http://www.worldgolf.com/travel/highest-golf-courses.htm

""But, without acclimatizing, people could still experience problems at 11,000 feet at La Paz. Headaches, nausea, edema, and even death can occur when people are not acclimatized to high elevations.""

The 18th at Ko'olau IS a beyatch.  They give you a free towel or something if you par it (at least in 1998 they did).

18th at Doral?  Isn't the 18th at Bay Hill tougher?

I have no trouble whatsoever believing this story ::)...I always carry at least 72 balls in my bag for every round I play.

Maybe this is why Ko'olau has pro shops located at the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, and 16th holes...plenty of opportunities to buy that extra dozen balls that you'll need for each three-hole stretch... :P

Let me mention that the listing of the 7th at Stone Harbor (NJ)is based on what the hole WAS -- rather than what is there NOW.

The former "jaws" hole by the late Desmond Muirhead has been significantly changed from its original look.

I can honestly say I had the "pleasure" in playing the original hole and hitting the green in any type of wind -- especially a headwind -- made hitting the green at the 17th at TPC / Sawgrass a piece of cake.

Oahu Golf Club? Did they change Ko'olau's name?

When I was there (also circa 1998) it wasnt a towel, but rather you pay 10 bucks into a "pool" and if you make par or better you win a Ko'olau leather staff bag...not that I'd want one of those, but still kinda funny.

Yesterday at a USGA Course Rating seminar they showed a picture of a hole on a course on Guam.  It was one of the toughest I've ever seen.  The instructor said that he had been there and most of the holes there were that hard or harder.  He had been to Koolau and this course on Guam and gave the impression that the one on Guam was tougher.

Dubious at best.
Look at #2

C'mon Tom D. Didn't you have a hand in that one too?

Adam:

I didn't have much of a hand in the 17th at PGA West.  When I first drew the plan it was a peninsula green and not an island ... but the client INSISTED on an island, and Pete could not tell Joe and Ernie no, because he'd done so much work for them.  So we racked our brains for a while on how to make it better than the 17th at Sawgrass.

However, the final version is something Pete came up with on his own one evening.  Lee Schmidt still has the final version framed under glass ... Pete drew it on the back of one of those hang-on-your-door room-service cards from the La Quinta Hotel.

Fun list to review but like someone noted,   it sounds like the water cooler survey was broken up before they could settle on 18 holes.  Or maybe this was a survey for an upcoming calendar.

#17 TPC Stadium is much tougher than #17 PGA West.

Except for this MVII yard beast at Chocolay Downs East in Michigan, the long par 4s are the hardest.  There is often little chance for recovery at par4s. At the par 3s,  one good shot (or lucky) and you're putting.  Par 5s allow for recovery.

The international flavor makes it a good read if nothing else.

I don't see a listing for the 12th at Machu Picchu ?  :)

Holes, in and of themselves, can be easy or difficult depending on prevailing conditions.  The pros at the 1997 World Cup ate The Ocean Course's lunch since there was virtually no wind on a course that was designed to play in a substantial wind (that and the fact that it was only set at around 6,750 yards for, as Colin Montgomerey put it, "the lesser nations")...  They were throwing out 63s and 64s.  It was a different story in 1991.  So, when considering toughest holes, conditions mean everything...

Friends of my family owned a house on the road leading to the course, and I played Seahouses several times back then, and that was the one hole which has always stuck in my memory.  Never seen anything like it before or since.

I'd be grateful to see any pics of the course, and especailly that hole.

I'd like to point out that Chocolay Downs "East" *doest not even exist.*  The original 18 is about ten minutes from my home and is the one I referred to a few months ago when discussing the "Are we spoiled?" thread.

Chocolay Downs' original 18 was originally designed by Jerry Matthews, though his design was massively reworked before it ever made the transition from blueprint to earth by the Gibbs family that owns the course.  Its 9th hole claims to have "The World's Largest Putting Green," and since it's usually in horrible condition, often takes half a normal golf swing to get a ball across.

GolfWorld interviewed Joe Gibbs in 2000 when he was planning on doing this new 18, "East."  He was quoted as saying his reasoning for designing the hole was that the then "World's Longest Hole" was in Japan, and since they lost World War 2 to the US, we should have it.

Reports from this spring are that the original 18 lost 16 of its greens over the winter, due in my estimation to the overall lack of care the course receives.  The roughs from the second nine, planted 10 years ago, still have not grown in any more than they had the first season, basically amounting to clumps of grass every few feet.

At that pace, the 8th at Chocolay "East" will likely remain fiction for many years to come.
