Craggy Bunkers and GB&I Links

Looking at the wonderful pics of Barnbougle and those craggy beautiful bunkers it made me think:

Which of the GB&I links would lend itself to the essence of that look, if skillfully restored?   Looking at old pics many didn't have the revetted pot bunkers that they do now.

I do recognise that it's really just a mind excersize, since the local greenkeepers and clubs are far too practical to move away from revetting.  But it would be an interesting experiment nonetheless.

Somehow, I can't picture Carnoustie with that look; Machrihanish is much easier.

County Down is the only example of a 'great course' that I can think of that already have craggy bunkers.

Southerness, Seascale, Tenby, Formby?  Gullane No.1?

I can almost picture Nairn like that, too.

Saunton, St Enodoc, Burnham & Berrow to pick three from the west country.

Saunton especially could go for the au naturel look.

I suggest going to Amazon, break out the Visa and buy Hutchinson's British Golf Links. You'll see as many of the craggy links bunkers your mind can handle at every famous and infamous links or inland links in Great Britain. It also contains one fo the very few rare photos of the actual Chasm Hole aka The Biarritz  of Golf de Pau.

Many just don't know just how great of a book this really is.

I agree with Sam Sikes about Royal County Down's bunkering. Maybe I've not seen much more than a couple of dozen GB&I courses over the years but I'll never forget some of those RCD bunkers. I believe I mentioned it before on here but there's one, on the right side of the fairway on #3, I think it is, where I could get up under its front lip in a heavy rain and not get a drop on me.
