best bunker?
« on: April 21, 2005, 03:52:55 PM »
what's your favorite bunker, and why?

first one that comes to my mind is on a par 3 at P Dunes, a huge pit short of the green...can't remember which hole :-[

definitely dictates a don't be short strategy

I also like a well-placed  fairway/pot bunker right in the middle of the fairway sometimes...the 7th hole at BlackWolf Run River has such a bunker that must be dealt with on the second shot

12th hole at San Francisco has a great bunker that looks perfect.  San Francisco in my mind is the best bunkered course in the US.

Paul, I do not think there is a best bunker at least in my minds eye. however, Hell's bunker at TOC, green side bunker at 17 as well as the 11th hole are great. I think Tom did a great job on the bunkering at Pacific dunes as well and I agree with Joel as to the quality of SFGC's overall bunkering but still would not say best in US. I really like much of the use and style of Coore and Crenshaw's bunkering for modern courses.

The bunker restoration that took place a Crystal Downs definately restored some of the character that was lacking.  I love the bunker on number seven, the one the green bends around.  If you look at a previous photo, and a photo now, it looks ten times better.

That has also got to be one of the finest green settings in the world.  THERE'S ANOTHER THREAD ;D
