How about the same question purely on an architectural basis?
Probably already been done a few times if so, I apologise.

Not sure if this has been done before... but please define what you mean by "archtectural basis"... and then cherished by whom, in that context?

This could yield some very interesting answers based on how you define the question....

I agree that was a bit too vague.

Either  1. Impact on the world of golf course architecture

or      2. Your personal viewpoint of golf courses

Within this group I am not sure there is a difference here or not!

Now those are very cood criteria.

I'll go for #2 - I am certain I am unqualified to assess re #1.

And for me it goes...

1. Sand Hills
2. Cypress Point
3. NGLA
4. St. Andrews Old
5. Pebble Beach

Pretty boring, I know.  But each of those do hold very cherished memories for me (some more than others!)... and they are what I call the five best courses in the world.

As to item no. 1 or no. 2,  from USA bias .....

TOC
National
Pine Valley
ANGC
Oakland Hills (from the aspect of the remodeling of classics to come and new courses to be built on that model in post WWII boom)
Harbour Town (start of new modern era)

These are all very persuasive lists.  Suppose you slanted it to the five courses which have had the greatest influence on what came after.  You might then have to add North Berwick.  But which course would you omit in order to accommodate it?
