Champagne and Bent Grass

I saw some replayed footage today of the Euro celebration.  Champagne was being sprayed every which way on the 18th green.  Does champagne or any other beverage have a negative effect on a green?

P - I don't know about champagne, but I can personally attest that neither Mt. Gay, Southside mix, the Myers Floater or mint when spilled has any appreciable impact on a green.

I have seen damage from alcoholic drinks on bentgrass greens. I don't know what proof is required to do the damage, but maybe if someone will fund my research....

If the American Ryder Cup team would like to consider selling their stash of champagne I might consider buying it for some appropriate discount.

I believe that salt from the rim of a margarita could damage turf in the same manner as RoundUp ... ;)

Sour grapes, on the other hand, could be a problem.

All kidding aside, I have been told by the super at my club that a beer spilled on a green will burn bent grass if not watered in quickly.  In fact, he recently asked in the club newsletter that members NOT to bring beer cans onto the greens because of two such spills on the 15th green.

I would assume that the super at Oakland Hills was more than ready for one team or the other to use champagne on the 18th green and had a crew ready to water it down as soon as the celebration subsided.

The bigger issue is what impact can opening a can of whoop-*** have on bentgrass.

Gentlemen,
after considerable study I am able to deduce that, at an average pH of 2.93, fine Champagne will have little effect on Agrostis tenuis which thrives in an acidic environment, but will do little to encourage the survival of A. stolonifera, which prefers non-acid soils....
