Add Scranton C.C. to the growing list of some of the older courses that've just undergone some really good restorations. A good amount of tree removal at Scranton that shows beautifully from the high clubhouse and a very fine restoration (or should I say "Master Plan Project" ) by Ian Andrew of Carrick Design. The superintendent, Greg Armstrong, was formerly the super at Merion and is really into maintaining the course into the design intent of the restoration.

I played Scranton last year with a crew from GCA and found the course quite interesting. Specifically, the greens at Scranton are among the wildest you are likely to see -- especially in spots like the 18th. It is a nice piece of property and the tree removal that has been undertaken has opened up the course and brought it back to life.
The Travis course's I've seen have been particularly interesting. Lookout Point near Niagara Falls is also quite great in spots.
Ian has done a terrific job of bringing the course back -- now the question is how far is Scranton willing to go?
Is Scranton worth seeing? For sure. Is it worth going out of your way to play. Yes to that as well.

I've been insulted on this website many times, and occassionally very effectively, I might add, but that's (or is it "that is"?) the greatest insult and the unkindest cut of all!
