Blackwell GC: Tom Simpson's
« on: August 31, 2004, 11:33:33 AM »
Not far from Birmingham.

I'm going to post some more pics showing Simpson's drawings.

The photos show a mix of great, good and bad.  It apears the Simpson style bunker work is rapidly being dismantled by the club.

Still a cool course though.  Well worth playing and a nice looking clubhouse.

The 12th has what was the longest bunker in the UK.  It goes a long way back from where I'm standing.  An excellent hole too.

The 10th.  Showing how the bunkers are being screwed up.

The 4th.  What a fine place for a sapling.

The lovely 13th!  Green slopes quickly towards the brook.

15th.

More to come

If you would...please describe how the 12th hole plays?
Was the right side of that bunker fairway some time ago?

Were you standing on the tee when you took the picture of the 13th green?

How many pictures to you have?  and I don't mean only Blackwell.

Great stuff as always.

Thanks

Paul, great photos as always, thanks!

I just finished reading Jim Dodson's "The Dewsweepers," in which he waxes euphorically about the bunkers built by Simpson at Fontainbleau and another course outside Paris.  Dramatic, deep cross bunkers.  Do you possibly have any photos of those, or anybody else?

Blimey! By the standards of most on this board I'm a bit of tree-hugger (keep the cold wind and the rain off donchaknow) but I'm staggered by those things on the 4th.

Maybe  they're the self-seeding  rubbish I find on my back meadow (ahem, lawn)  and everyone thinks they're someone else's legacy.

"Umm, yesss, well, I don't really remember it coming up in committee but it's what he would have wanted. Just because the skipper's in his box doesn't mean we have to rip out all those things he held so dear."

"No, I don't like to offend the greenskeeper. After all, we can always pop it over the dogleg from our senior tee anyway."

"It is a little strange isn't it? But we have photos of it from the sapling stage so it must be right. I'm glad you can include it in our restoration."

Thanks for the pics Paul.

I agree with Mike, that bunker on 12 looks like it split the fairway. In fact I wonder if it was the same on #4 and 15. Was there a tight right side line that would cut the dogleg a bit and open up the green?
All those trees look young but those on #4! Words fail me.
Is anyone involved in the restoration or should this be an example in the worst committee decision thread?
