Can you name the 10 courses in this one aerial, all within a few miles of each other ?

Neil,

That's mean.  Not many are going to get the public course just north of the parkway.  I must've driven by it 500 times and I never stopped in to walk it.

Not even a guess about the golf courses. I'm just hoping to guess the region of the country. I'm guessing NY Met area, possibly Wing Foot, Fenway area?

    Great areial!

Great picture, here we go Siwanoy, Wykagyl, Lake Isle, Leewood, Saxon Woods, Scarsdale Golf Club, Bonnie Briar, Quaker Ridge, Winged Foot West & East.

BigDuke,

Close, 9 out of 10.  The one at the top isn't Scarsdale, but Fenway.

6 of the 10 were AOTDs, so I guess I'm cheating.  :-X

Nothing like infrared aerials from the USGS to throw colors for a loop.

I thought it was somewhere in Scotland until I realized that most of the courses over here are green (or brown) and not red.  Is Westchester County some sort of Superfund site?

Rich,

For some reason I was reminded to stop by the bait shop on the way home for a styrofoam cup full of nightcrawlers.

I grew up just down the road from Saxon Woods and had always heard rumors that Tillie did the original design.  Can anyone confirm just how much Tillie participated in the design and construction of this municipal course?

Neil - You could have gotten more and better courses by moving a frame east. Sacrificing Lake Isle, Leewood and Siwanoy for Westchester (45 holes), Apawamis and probably Maple Moor. Which also would likely have included Willow Ridge, parts of Rye Golf and Hampshire thrown in for good measure.

Geoffrey,

According to a number of sources ranging from Cornish & Whitten to Wolffe & the Tillnghast Association, Saxon Woods is an original Tillinghast design done in 1930.

In fact, of the 10 courses shown, 8 were worked on by Tilly.

Bonnie Briar - Renovations & Additions - 1923
Fenway (Fenimore) - Original Design - 1924
Quaker Ridge - Original Design - 1918
Saxon Woods - Original Design - 1930
Siwanoy - Renovations - 1936
Wykagl - Renovations & Additions - 1931
Winged Foot West & East - Original Designs - 1923

In addition, the misidentified Scarsdale is also a Tillinghast Original Design done in 1923.

For most architects, this list is a career, for Tillinghast it doesn't even represent 10% of his original designs & far less than that of his reniovations.

Phillip - I'd be curious to see your list of Tillie's original designs. Could you post it?

Isn't Old Oaks (Tillinghast) nearby as well, I thought the property abutted the parkway--?

Course names are in bold typeface.
AKA – Also Known As.
FKA – Formerly Known As.
All courses are 18 hole designs unless otherwise noted.
Dates in parentheses (1920) are the dates of course openings according to the Tillinghast Association.
Dates in brackets [1920] are the dates of course openings according to Geoffrey Cornish and Ron Whitten.

The courses that are listed above are a composite of the two listings of Tillinghast courses that are given the most credence. One is from the book, The Golf Course , by Geoffrey Cornish and Ron Whitten. The other is from the Tillinghast Association web-site , by Rick Wolffe and Bob Trebus.
The dates listed are the opening dates of these courses with separate references where they differ. In addition, a number of the courses do not have an opening date. This is due to confusion over the exact date or their not being known.
In addition, the courses that follow are a composite of the two lists of most of the courses that Tilly performed Renovations (R) or Additions (A) to, and are listed as such.
