Engh's Black Rock v. Silva's Black Rock

Intersting review by Ron Whitten as he compares and contrasts both Black Rocks. I think the larger issue for GD is to have a super panel of raters who can play the top 5 finalists in each category so that regional favoritism can be eliminated. We don't know how many raters played Black Rock, Friars Head AND Dallas National, for example. Interesting to note that RW would rank Silva's Black Rock up there with Engh's Black Rock.

I played Silva's Black Rock last year, and posted some photos here.  I can't seem to find the thread, and I'm pretty sure that the photos aren't accessible any more anyway.

But I shared Whitten's enthusiasm for the course; it is definitely the best modern private course I have played in Massachusetts.

I have not played the other Black Rock, so I can't add much to the comparison.

First, allow me to introduce myself.  My name is the Mark Lucas, and this is my first post.  I have been lurking at this site for a while, but became a member yesterday.  I really enjoy the discussion here about architecture and courses in general.

I have not seen Engh's work, but I have seen Silva's Black Rock - at least before it was grassed.  I had the opportunity to walk the site with Brian Silva during construction just prior to seeding, and was able to see all of the shaping, outcroppings, and green and bunker complexes.  I thought it had a chance to be a great course.  He worked around nearly all outcroppings, leaving them natural.  And those that weren't natural, were strategically placed for shot selection.

The pictures of Black Rock (Mass.) looked great.  I believe that much of Silva's work is underrated.  He definitely has the Raynor flair, and this may turn some off.  But having played some of his designs, I believe they are not only thoughtful designs and routings, but innovative and challenging as well.

as a member of black rock (silva) it is interesting to read through the various posts- IMHO, Silva did a great job w leaving the quarry features of the land- the downside is that some of the real estate was poorly sited- encroaching in a few spots.
all in all, "the rock" is maturing nicely- and will give Mr Hanse and Mr Coore- whose work is close by- a real run for their money...

dsilk, I agree about the real estate.  There was one par 5 (dogleg left) that had a couple of homes in inappropriate locations.  But after having played a few courses in Palm Springs with condo-lined fairways, I found it easy to block out the handful of misplaced estates.
