John O Groats Hole @ Turnberry GC
« on: July 24, 2004, 04:26:50 PM »
When I first saw this postcard , it immediately looked familiar .

I have played Ailsa , and couldnt remember a greensite similar to that . It must be the Arrran I thought , but my only memory from the once I played it is of one of the foulest rounds , weather wise , I have ever played and we were not hanging about taking in the views .

Then it struck me , I am 90% sure this is the greensite of the 8th on the Kintyre Course ? .

Looking at my scorecard from that day on the Arran , it reveals a lot of big numbers and no hole called John O Groats .

So this must be Pre-World War II ? , and the work of Willie Fernie ? .

If I am right and it is the same Greensite , which do you prefer ? . Donald Steels or Willie Fernies ?

Either way you've got to love that front to back sloping green with the chasm behind!  I like the charm of the steep-looking bank behind the old version, but the slippier back of the modern is really scary!  How long is the hole?  Nice photos.

I have no idea about the old pic.

When the Arran was changed to the Kintyre , they acquired more land , so the routing will be different .

The 8th on the Kintyre course is a downhill short par 4 of 298 / 278 yards .

One of my Favourite holes at Turnberry .

Brian, it may only be 298 but with that pin, you'd better be very careful!  I sense that disaster awaits the overly aggressive!

Sure looks like the Kintyre hole to me!

I thought Steel's work at the Kintyre course was quite good. That made the awful work at the Eden course in St. Andrews all the more surprising.

I found Turnberry's "relief" course to be a lot of fun and quite challenging. Not the Alisa, but then again, few are...

the middle picture above of the Steels design is a little potentially deceptive because that's the next fairway you see above (a difficult driving hole in it's own right).  the drive to the green in question is utterly blind (and not really downhill as i recall) and folds over to the right slope into the coast at a pretty sharp angle (that part is down into the coastline).
