Given Jim's description of the parameters his friends club has to deal with, no problem on land to site it, no problem on $$$ to build it, then the only real question is who will design it?  Brian's examples and link to a GCA's web page who is in the business of practice facility design are certainly a good reason to emphasize that with such luxurious budget and land available, one should hire a good archie that specializes in that sort of work.  Heck, anyone on this board can come up with grand practice facility ideas.  But, how much you spend, and if the design is functional and efficient are best left to those that specialise and have proven track records.

But, to the extent of functionality, what do you need beyond a good teeing line with enough space to move the line forward and back as divots chew it up or, some of that new sport turf to take the wear and tear.  If you have enough room to watch the flight of your ball, and a putting green that is maintained at the speed of the course greens, and a pitching-sand bunker practice green, what more do you need?

While I was at first negative about Rustic Canyon's artificial turf range, and it is not aesthetically great, it functions... ::)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I have not seen many of the mentioned candidates but Cave's Valley is unreal.  Four seperate hitting areas and a learning center equiped with all the lastest state of the art gizmo's.  The have more money invested in practice facilities than in the average 18 holes.

Certainly the oddest practice facility I ever saw was the way NGLA used to be. It was the back of the first tee. Some of those old richer than God coots would go into the pro shop buy a few sleeves of new balls and hit them out into the bay from the back of the first tee.

NGLA has a pretty funky range now but they don't even allow the old richer than God coots to hit balls off the back of the range anymore.

I'd like to see what they do about that if C.B somehow happened to saunter up to the first tee today. They'd probably give him all the new sleeves he wanted and watch him hit them into the bay. Or else he'd go into the pro shop and take as many sleeves as he wanted and tell the shop to bill them to the membership and then proceed to hit them all into the bay.

  Agreed.
Why mess up vodka with tonic? Hamburgers with mustard? Yikes. Beer with lime? Go to Mexico. Who needs putter head covers? Be a real man. Silly waterfalls, they're out. Breast implants? BS, give me au naturale.
Practice facilities? Come on. Give me grass and a target. Dig it out of the dirt man.

Now I know why I like you Dave. Keep it simple......
