John C. thanks for putting up with my pregame jabber here on a great golf topic. And I want to second Tom H. comment about playing lesser courses. Two of my favorite rounds on the west coast were on courses that were far from the beat in their repective area. The round Adam set up a Pacific Grove with a bunch of great GCA guys was one of my favorite days ever in a place in which have been fortunate enough to play all the great courses numerous times. Another day Tom H., Dan King and i played at Monarch Bay and had a great day together. The company makes any course great. The view at monarch Bay is woish and Pacific Grove is a really a wonderful place in its own right. It just suffers from being in one of golf's best neighborhoods.

TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS!!!!!

I was definitely thinking of you last night, JDB!  Damn fun game to watch... you must have had a BLAST being there!  I'm surprised you're at a computer today....

Sorry Paul, but the better athletes won that game.  WOW... You can be proud the Illini came back and made a bit of a game of it in 2nd half.

Now as for golf courses, well said JDB.  Kinda goes with my take that if the friends are good the golf is good, no matter what.  But those two courses are fun no matter what also, so deserve to be classified somehow, with some "positive" that would not occur using the Doak or Michelin scales.

That's my strange view anyway... ;)

Tom, John, et al:

Congrats to your Tigers. ;)

No doubt the better team won last night. :D

At least the Illini didn't roll over and play dead.  They did
make the second half at least exciting enough to stay up
and watch! :o

Not sure how good your quarterback is, but the Illini defense
sure made him look like a Heisman candidate! :)

John,
Congrats on the win.  I look forward to meeting you at LSU's next game (sans R. Davey) in Blacksburg.   Unless, of course, the birth of my second child earlier in August doesn't negate my attendance at the newly expanded stadium.  We'll have to try to get a round in in the morning.

So, ........I've gone from a Rees basher to a Rees lover!!!!!

There's hope for me yet! G*dd*mn!!!!!  redanman's redemption.

Actually, I may yet come to the conclusion that in the last 5 years, Rees average is better than Fazio's average.  Rees is getting better, Fazio is mailing it in.

It can all come down to subjective taste at some level. (B, B&R) The real quality is few and far between and influenced by so many factors as to be unobtainable.  That unfortunately is the sad truth.

Hey John -
Heard recently that Steve Smyers is doing a $6mm makeover of The International GC, which will among other things reconfigure and reverse the routings. Hopefully he'll bring some similar work to the place that he brought to Old Memorial.
Maybe your deciles will be due for a shake-up.

SPDB,
I think Smyers does some nice work but don't you think he goes way over board with the bunkers.  Old Memorial has zillions of them.  They are a maintenance nightmare.  Supposedly the large number were put in because of water restrictions!

Mark,
I do agree that Smyers goes overboard on bunkers, but somehow at Old Memorial they didn't bother me. Royce Brook, on the other hand, i feel is an absolute disaster. The bunkering (and the design, IMO) borders on the obscene.

If you are talking about the International by Sea World that is great news.  Smyers tends to give wider corridors than International affords.  I don't know if there is enough room on the site to do much, but it is no fun pulling your ball out of the bushes every hole.

I will admit that one of the reasons I despise the place so much is that they treated locals VERY badly in the past.  The course is no good and they did a few things that set me off.  Marriott now manages and I'm sure it is a HUGE improvement.

(Spider: I was in grad school and they wouldn't accept a school ID for the residency!  I didn't need a FL drivers license at the time.  I decided that I also didn't need to play International ever again.  There is another bad experience dealing with a not too knowledgeable starter on the first tee before we even went out.  Any rounds they've ever done are the result of location, not great golf.)

This thread goes back a couple of years and is quite lengthy. However,  I'm bringing this thread up again since the whole rankings/ratings thing seems to be hot and heavy here these days. At the time I thought the decile thesis advanced by John Conley held some validity since it's difficult to split hairs when comparing courses, and there were some interesting thoughts advanced.

If you go back to the early posts you'll see such keen analysis as "Huckaby on Cali," "Wigler on Michigan," "Richards on Illinois" and the like.

Enjoy!
