Pinehurst to lengthen and tighten #2 for the '05 Open...

http://sports.yahoo.golfserv.com/gdc/news/article.asp?Source=YAHOO&id=21351

How can this be a good thing?  Having not played there...what were the original fairway widths to begin with?

Evan,

I was out at #2 a few weeks ago and here's the summary of changes I saw or was told about, http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forums2/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=8881.

The good news is that the Pinehurst folks are smart enough not to let Jones or anyone from the USGA touch the greens or chipping areas.

The fairways are normally anywhere from 40-50yards wide for normal play, but keep in mind that Pinehurst, even #2, is essentially a resort course.  They mention in the article that they were 28-32yds for the '99 Open, but my caddy told me they were closer to 25yds for the '99 Open.  Hopefully the USGA will heed their previous wisedom and leave the rough shorter, as they did in '99, so the effect is just a lack of spin on approaches into the greens.

I assume you mean they won't let Jones touch them again.  Obviously, he touched them quite a bit before the '99 Open.

Scott,

They were re-built when the underground water-removal (suction) systems were put in, but did Jones actually alter the shapes, sizes and contours?

Certainly putting in suction systems is a lot of touching, wouldn't you say?   ;D   I know what you mean, but I think there was some work keeping them "#2-like" (notice I didn't say Ross-like), but I'd doubt they're exactly the same as they were pre-Rees.  Rees' web site lists his work done at #2 as "Redesign".

Brian,

Thanks for the original link...I missed that thread somehow.  I guess it was not the length issue that bothered me so much, but the narrowing of Ross fairways that got to me.

Again, other than a quick walk around a few holes I don't really know much about the place, but I'd hate to see them take away the Ross "bite" by putting rough everywhere and taking away some of the great collection areas as well as run-off areas that seem present on both the fairways and green complexes.

Evan,

I'm just guessing, but I doubt they'll grow the rough up near the greens.  Feedback (other than John Daly on #8) seemed to be positive about the various options allowed around the greens.

I agree with you about the narrow fairways.  The course is going to look a little like ANGC in that you have these huge areas between the pines, which is how the course is supposed to play, and the fairways will look like landing strips.  The other sad part is that some of the fairway bunkering will now be over in the rough and somewhat out of play (1, 2, 11, 13, 14).
