An old postcard.
Tommy N. says San Francisco GC can be seen in the upper right.

And look at the size of that green.  Just shows you Willie Park, Jr. first said back in 1896 when he reminded us about the ever changing state of our golf courses.  He said it is a mistake to assume that our older golf courses in their present condition are the same as when first fashioned.  He goes on to say that the original formation of them is lost in past centuries; but we know that changes have frequently been made, and they will continue to evolve.

Park II was praying the courses of 1896 would change.

Has Olympic evolved for the better or worse?

From the angle of the picture, SFGC is to the left out of the picture.  The detail isn't good enough for my eyes but you would be looking directly at Lake Merced which was built in 1922.

Mike,
When Neil and I were talking about it last night, I felt that this area might be the area of SFGC. I meant my other upper right, neil!  ::)

Hmmm ... I think SFGC is still to your "other right" off camera ...

Maybe someone I know can find a current picture ...

Here is a larger version of the picture. This may disappear from cyberspace soon.

For movie buffs (Scott B. in particular), the valley between the two hills in the top of the photo (above the clump of trees shape like a "V") is the road that leads to the Cow Palace (Palace de Bovine as it is sometimes known) where the famous car chase scene in the 1968 Steve McQueen movie Bullit, was filmed (or at least part of the 9 minute scene in the movie) ...

Without trees Olympic Lake would be a complete pushover today.

For the masses or Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour?

For 99.9% of the golfers, the angles, reverse camber fairways and small greens make Olympic a very difficult course even without trees.

He's The Golf Expert, Joel, so I imagine he'd be part of that 0.1% that wouldn't be challenged.

Kevin:

I would rather stick a hot needle in my eye than address my post to the "golf expert".  I'm sure he/she came over from a golf chat room at AOL.
