I've played so little golf in the past year that it almost sickens me. But that's what having two extremely active daughters and a hard-working wife will get you, some years: enough time to talk about golf, and to dream about golf, and to think about golf -- but not enough time to play golf.

My wife and I did get down to Cabo San Lucas last fall, and I got to play Cabo del Sol, Palmilla, and Eldorado -- on her company's tab! Cabo del Sol and Palmilla were fine, or better than fine -- but Eldorado was spectacular. Most fun I've had on a course in years. The holes by the Sea of Cortez are terrific. I also loved a long, sweeping dogleg-right par-5 (No. 7, I think) that must drop several hundred feet from tee down to green.

Another fun course: Chateau Whistler, in Whistler, British Columbia. Nine holes up the mountain; nine holes back down. Not a GREAT course, but plenty of fun.

Adam,

AMEN to Frog Hollow, a real surprising treat in Delaware.

Maidstone (although it's a great course) might set a whole new threshold for the definition of "fun".  I'm still running on adrenaline after 36 holes yesterday and a 4 hour drive home last night!

Doug Wright --

What, exactly, did Ross do at Minikahda?

Just curious.

I forgot to add another one.

Rockaway Hunt Club-  Its right on the water just east of JFK airport.  The wind usually blows, the ground game is alive and it is first rate, sporty fun golf course.

Boat of Garten
Fortrose and Rosemarkie
Both James Braid courses, both around 6000yd mark, very beautiful settings and a lot of fun.30 quid or 50 bucks makes it more fun too.

Fraserburgh
Rained out at Nairn and on our way to Cruden Bay. I had never heard of this course but Donald Steel's book said the architect was James Braid. The golf course looked like a cow pasture ( which was an extra course). The real course was over sizable hills. The first and 18th were relatively flat. The rest of the course  was up and down hills, dunes etc. The north sea, while not in view was just over a ridge and the wind was severe. On a trip that included Brora,Dornock, Carnegie Club, Tain,Cruden Bay,Kingsbarnes and Downfield Fraserburgh was the unexpected treat.

Nick - thanks for mentioning another of my personal faves - FORTROSE AND ROSEMARKIE!!!

That could have been the most pure "fun" course I played in the entirety of Great Britain and Ireland.  Just a blast.

And Rich, great call re Pajaro, OClub Ocean and Sea Ranch!  Love em all, all great fun.

Can you and I answer this question again two weeks from now?  We're gonna have some incredible additions, methinks....

Ben--

Palm Beach Country Club is located in the northern end of the island of Palm Beach.  It is sandwiched between the ocean and the intracoastal with close views of both, but no holes actually on them.  The course was designed by Donald Ross.

Being as he had a small piece of property, Ross had to work hard to get the course in, meaning a lot of paralell holes.  It's fortunate that the course does not receive a lot of play because there are a couple places that you feel like you're in a shooting gallery.

The six par 3s are the real strength of the course, ranging from 100 yards (and it's no pushover) to 228 yards with various yardages in between. I guess that covers the entire course, that there is a lot of variety in the holes and shots you have to play.  There is a drivable par 4 and reachable par 5s and there are a couple real long par 4s and 5s (especially when the wind is factored in).  The biggest surprise is that the course is reasonably hilly, not as much as Jupiter Hills, but alot for South Florida.

The course does have several weak holes and I'm not sure if they were Ross' fault.

Mike--

Frog Hollow was a real treat to play.  It's a shame that housing is going to go in so near the course.  I'm looking forward to seeing what Allen Liddicoat does next.

Maidstone is awesome, something totally different in the pantheon of American courses.  I don't think anyone would tear it up given firm and fast conditions tee to green.

I think Fishers Island was mentioned as a fun course and I agree totally.  However, at par 70 (8 and 18 as 4s -- I can hear the groaning now)it's a brutal test.  Fisher's and Maidstone are similar in the sense that a player is required to play a lot of different types of shots to do well.

Jamie,

Great call on Twisted Dune!  Absolutely, an A1 Blast!

Adam,

Although developer Allen Liddicoat gets a good deal of the credit for Frog Hollow (and his other course, Back Creek...he reportedly has a great affinity for classic designs), the actual golf course architect of both projects is one David Horn from Catasaqua, PA.

Aren't they a superb set of greens?

BTW, are you still planning to be in Maryland during the first weekend in November?

JamieS,

You made me think of our GCA outing two years ago in the Pinehurst area...we played Tobacco Road in the early afternoon, then a late afternoon/early evening round at Mid Pines.

Talk about a contrast in styles!!!  but the company and courses were something to remember...what a great golf day on a couple of really fun courses.

St Enodoc in Cornwall is great fun, some v. good holes, some very quirky holes. Has a Himalaya style bunker too.

I should mention that my first assitant's job was at Chantilly Manor CC, a course that was owned by Allen Liddicoat.  I always get a kick out of plugging him even though I know David did most of the nuts and bolts work.

Evan,

You were right the first time, it was Tobacco Road and then Mid-Pines afterwards. We played as a fivesome in under 3 hours at Mid-Pines. It was a day of contrasts thats for sure.

Dan Kelly,

Re Minikahda Ross is credited with a 1917 redesign of the orginal Robert Foulis/Willie Watson course, which opened in 1907. Although there has been some reworking since, and 3 new holes (15, 16 and 17) due to highway construction, there are several Ross features present. These include location of greens at the highest points or in bowls, as evidenced by greens at #2, the wonderful par 3 #3 and the skyline green #9. Also I think the routing is Rossian, eg the excellent par 5 4th which plays over a large ridge bisecting the fairway. Others may know more, but that's my 2 cents.
