Re: Do Bunkers Represent the Same Strategic Value They Once Did?

No but maybe a different strategic value ......

If bunker maintenance goes down due to operating cost reductions, thus there will be an irregular amount of sand and a depth of unknowable sand compaction that will turn make bunker play more difficult and unpredictable for the more skilled golfer.

It probably has occurred on some courses.

Ian:

To the guy who said he was spending 25% of the maintenance budget on the bunkers, did anyone say, "Stop it!" ?
Not at that club.

I advocated maintainance on a "needs" basis, but to a degree, that encourages inconsistancy, at a time when most golfers crave consistancy, today.

In addition, the bunkers are numerous and large and there's an enormous amount of sq/ft to be maintained.

You would only need to have a 2-3% of shots that get in a bunker that get into deep trouble (having to play sideways or wedge out) to make a bunker more revelant...

the thing is, modern players are soft and would not accept it... golf would be better if course were a 1000 yards shorter with more severe hazards.
