P.S.  Medal vs Match play falls in the category of "it depends".  Individual matches or a few guys looking for a fun weekend, match play of course.  But for a 2 day local weekend tourney with 50+ players, good luck running a match-play to determine that...

So for Kalen's benefit, I decided to try to run The Players Championship as a match play event. I Googled to find out how many competitors the tournament has, and found that traditionally it has had 144. So I proceeded to organize a 144 player match play. Unfortunately, when I went to find the actual players, it turns out they increased the field to 154 for this year. I will stick with 144 for now as 154 is not evenly divisible by 3, and I had already put a bunch of time in seeding a 144 player tournment.

The first round format is threesomes with each person engaged in two matches, one with each of the other members of the threesome. The seeding was to order the players by world rank from 1 to 144, and then form threesomes of as even total seeding as possible. After each threesome, you see the sum of the seedings.

I will try to score and reseed after each round, but may fall behind the tournament as it can be time consuming. I will try to record each players scores after each round so that I can eventually work through generating the results if I can't keep up with the tournament.

The Ryder cup at my club is done with three teams, so individual matches are done exactly that way.

the math can work if you play them against their two playing partners AND the three in the group in front or behind them. This would reduce the field by 6 each of the first two days then against their playing partner (as twosomes) over the weekend.

Si Woo Kim leads after three round of the match play. He has won 4+2=6 matches, with a total of 10+3=13 holes not needed to be played due to him closing out the opponents early. DeChambeau and Ancer are the only other golfers that have won all six matches. If one player in the final threesome wins both matches, he will be the winner.

Several players that made the cut in match play, didn't make the cut in medal play. Therefore, when you see Name1/Name2, the first person made the cut in match play, but not in medal play. When this happened, I substituted Name2's scores for the final two rounds.

All those numbers are not very exciting to look at, but, I think  you should do a hole by hole look at the final matches, as I just did.  It would have been a much much different thing to watch, even discounting that the results might have been completely different if the three guys were playing head to head and seeing what they had to beat.

I would note that if the last threesome (assuming leaders go off last) went something like

I had assumed the more conventional knockout style associated with Match Play.

Assuming a 144 person event:

Thursday - 144 players in 48 groups of 3.  Winner of each group advances, losers go home
Friday - 48 players in 16 groups of 3.  Same thing, winner advances, others go home
Saturday Morning - 16 in 8 groups of 2
Saturday Afternoon - 8 in 4 groups of 2
Sunday Morning - 4 in 2 groups of 2
Sunday Afternoon - Final 2 to determine a winner

What I find surprising about Kim's win is that when I started this, I didn't expect anyone was going to go 8 and 0 in their matches. I expected some golfers might win 7 or 7.5 and one be declared winner by requiring the least number of holes to get there.
