George Cup VIII: 9/29/18 @ Ballyhack Golf Club
« on: January 05, 2018, 04:52:36 PM »
Gents:

George Cup VIII will be contested on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Ballyhack Golf Club just outside Roanoke, Virginia...and you are invited to play!  Our 27-hole format provides a day of fun and fellowship and is followed by dinner and The Quiz before the George Cup is finally earned and awarded.

Past Champions include:
  • 2011 Jason Williams
  • 2012 Andy Hughes
  • 2013 Kevin Lynch
  • 2014 Tommy Williamsen
  • 2015 Scott Weersing
  • 2016 Scott Weersing
  • 2017 Livingston Lewis
New ownership has already made significant investments into the Ballyhack property, including four new cottages and a new maintenance facility (underway).  Our new Superintendent, Steven Ball, has produced unprecedented playing conditions and September should offer terrific golf weather here in the Star City.

Limited on-site accommodations will be available and golf is also offered on Friday, September 28 and Sunday, September 30.
If you are interested, I can inquire about Friday golf at The Hill in Blacksburg (~45 minute drive), where Lester George is completing a renovation, and/or at The Dormie Club (~175 miles/~3 hours away), which is now owned and managed within the Ballyhack family.

On-site entry fee is $50 cash (paid to the Commissioner).   Each player is asked to bring one hole prize.  As always, dinner and The Quiz will be held at 7:00ish on Saturday night in the Ballyhack clubhouse.  Our George Cup VIII Champion will receive a Ballyhack pin flag, an engraved milk jug, and custody of the George Cup for one year.

For more information, please see:
To RSVP, please click: https://tinyurl.com/y9mavsxv.  If you wish to bring a guest or if you would like to Play The Hill or Dormie Club on Friday, September 28, please email me directly.

I appreciate your questions or comments and look forward to a great event this fall.

Highlight of Kevin Lynch's golfing year, is pudding's proof for me. Very special place, very special golf.

If I weren't coaching high school golf at that time of year, I'd be saving my bottle deposits and found coins for a trip to Ballyhack.

Much success to all who play. Great of Wade to organize, year in and out.

Would you rather be playing on September 29 or watching the Ryder Cup from France?

Don't worry. You can do both as the Ryder Cup will be early in the morning East Coast time with a 5 hour time difference.

I'm in again. One of the best weekends in golf! The George Cup dinner alone is worth the price of admission.

Did anyone lose a George Cup ball on #6? I found it.

And then lost it a couple holes later.

We call the creek and forest on the left hand side of no. 6 as Lord of the Ring forest, or Fanghorn, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fangorn

If you hit a ball there, you may never escape.

George Cup Titleists (all #5s) were an event favor three years ago.  I've lost at least two dozen of them around the place since then.

One of my favorite quiz questions of all time dealt with lost balls, circa 2014ish: When the two fairway bunkers on #5 were torn out and moved, how many golf balls were found in and around them?

Been MIA around here lately with family issues, but you can count on me to make it 8 years running.

Of course it is the only weekend in Sept/Oct I can't make it. I have my fiftieth college reunion that weekend in Minnesota.
By the way, I have your George Cup balls Wade. Found them them long and left.

Who won?
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

JC:

Unfortunately, after cancellations from multiple respondents (most due to legitimate conflicts, awful stretch of weather leading up to the event, unexpected opportunities, etc.), I canceled George Cup VIII.

Still had three guys visit.  Still played 36 holes on Saturday.  Enjoyed Poplar Grove and an old Flynn design on bookend days.  A bit of cash traded hands, but the Cup remains in Livingston Lewis's possession for another year.
