Westhampton CC's 13th - Leven?
« on: October 11, 2013, 04:52:24 PM »
Seth Raynor's 13th at Westhampton is a most unusual short par-4 (322 yards from the back tee) that strategically is reminiscent of a Leven hole.

Ran's description in "Courses by Country," doesn't identify the hole as such.

With OB on the left, the bold line must contend with it to gain better visibility of the putting surface.

Got to play here a little over two weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the round. The Club has tapped Gil Hanse to recapture some lost putting areas, remove trees, renovate bunkers, etc. They're doing a great job.

so here are a few images...

Leven or not?

Mike,

When Ran played the hole the 13th was configured differently

Westhampton, like Southampton is greatly under rated, it's a terrific golf course

Here is a thread about the Leven hole with some pictures and description of the original at Lundin Links.

Whether Westhampton qualifies as a "Leven" hole will depend on who you ask.  For those who feel one attribute of a template original hole (in this case a blocking hill) is enough, then probably yes, this hole fits the bill.  Others, that are looking for a closer match to all the features of the original template, will probably find that it comes up short.  From the pictures, the "hill" looks very abrupt and artificial and doesn't really suit my eye.  On the original Leven hole you can potentially run your drive over the "hill".  That doesn't really look possible at Westhampton.
